Habitat conditions may shape the abundance and community structure of planktonic fauna. In this study, we investigated whether reservoirs with different locations and drainage basins also differed in the structure and abundance of zooplankton. The studies were conducted in 2010–2011 between June and October in the Vistula Lagoon and Lake Łebsko. The zooplankton was dominated mainly by small eurytopic organisms belonging to Rotifera. Plankton crustaceans showed a limited diversity of species. Copepods were predominant, while Cladocera were observed sporadically in more freshwater habitats.

Freshwater ecosystems have a greater value for biodiversity per surface area than terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Streams and lakes are notably prone to biodiversity loss, being the greatest threats habitat destructions and nonnative species. The aim of the present study is to assess the fish composition of lotic and lentic water systems of an island ecosystem (Gökçeada Island, Turkey), which is poorly studied, and to highlight the entry routes and possible impacts of translocated fish species in an island ecosystem.

In many prokaryotic genera a clustered phylogeny is observed, akin to the occurrence of species in sexually reproducing organisms. For some taxa, homologous recombination has been invoked as the underlying mechanism providing genomic cohesion among conspecific individuals. Whether this mechanism is applicable to prokaryotes in freshwaters with low habitat connectivity – i.e. elevated geographic barriers to gene flow – is unclear.

Lake Baikal is one of the oldest freshwater lakes and has constituted a stable environment for millions of years, in stark contrast to small, transient bodies of water in its immediate vicinity. A highly diverse endemic endemic amphipod fauna is found in one, but not the other habitat. We ask here whether differences in stress response can explain the immiscibility barrier between Lake Baikal and non-Baikal faunas.

The freshwater copepod Mesocyclops Sar, 1914, a species-rich genus within the family Cyclopidae Rafinesque, 1815, is common in tropical areas. In addition, the genus members are used for the biological control of mosquito larvae (Anopheles, Aedes) which are vectors for transmitting dengue fever. In Vietnam, a total of 11 Mesocyclops species have been recorded in inland freshwater bodies. Of which, one endemic species (M. sondoongensis Tran & Hołyńska, 2015) and two species were described from Vietnam, namely M. yenae Hołyńska, 1998; M. ferjemurami Hołyńska & Vu, 2000.

Lentic systems are a diverse set of inland freshwater habitats (Lakes and ponds) exist across the globe and provide essential resources and habitats for both terrestrial and aquatic organisms. The current work was intended to evaluate the quality of the selected ponds (Pond 1, 2 and 3) in and around Vellore district, TamilNadu. The water samples were collected to determine the physical and chemical parameters during every month in the year 2019. Water parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, Alkalinity, electrical conductivity, Chloride, Sulphate, Nitrate, Ca, Cl was studied.

Petroleum is a complex mixture composed primarily of aliphatics, alicyclics and aromatic hydrocarbons. This study was to evaluate the potentials of native bacterial population of wastewater environment with the ability for bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon polluted natural environment. A fresh water ecosystem west of Lagos state university, Ojo campus that has the history of being fed with both domestic wastewater and spent diesel oil served as source of bacterial samples. he aim of this study was to assess the toxicity of dispersants (OSD/SEACARE and OSD/LT) with different concentrations on the growth of Aspergillus and Rhizopus species in fresh water (Ocdee River) in KegbaraDereGokana Local Government Area, Rivers State. The Fresh water sample was collected by submerging 10liters of jerry Can (sterile) into a depth of 30cm in K-Dere River in Gokana Local Government Area, Rivers State. The samples were transported to the laboratory in sterile containers packed in coolers in an ice pack for analyses within six hours of collection.

A study was conducted to examine the changes in biochemical composition consisting moisture, protein, lipid, carbohydrate, ash content and mineral composition of Indian shad, hilsa (T. ilisha) during upstream migration for spawning from off-shore of the Bay of Bengal to the Bhagirathi-Hooghly zones of the Ganga river system in India. Adult hilsa fish were collected from seawater (SW), freshwater 1 (FW1) and freshwater 2 (FW2) locations, where the salinity level was 26-28‰, 1-5‰ and 0-0.04‰ respectively.
