Learning to resolve

Some of the most important skills of university students is to develop the capacity to resolve problems posed by their communities, which implies that students become independent, autonomous and self-regulated. Also they need to be capable of monitor, asses and modify their learning through their own process of metacognition, this way they can develop the required knowledge and improve their learning.

Ebook "Advances in the understanding of biological sciences using next generation sequencing (NGS) approaches" provides a global view of the recent advances in the biological sciences and the adaption of the pathogen to the host plants revealed using NGS. Molecular Omic’s is now a major driving force to learn the adaption genetics and a great challenge to the scientific community, which can be resolved through the application of the NGS technologies.

Ebook "High resolution microbial single cell analytics (Advances in biochemical engineering/biotechnology, Volume 124)" intrigues the reader to learn more about microorganism and their complexity but mainly on the techniques which can be used to understand their basic principles of live and survival. Highly resolved information on these small organisms will enable us to quantify their life and to orchestrate their abilities to a successful control and optimisation of bioprocesses.

Ebook "Secrets of power negotiating: Update for the 21st century" reflects the brave new world in which we live. You’ll find expanded chapters on negotiating with people from other cultures. It’s what I’ve learned from conducting Power Negotiating seminars around the world, from Kuwait to Nigeria to China, and New Zealand to Iceland. As different as we are, I find that most people want the same thing from a negotiation: They want a fair deal for both sides. They want to use their new negotiating skills to improve their position.

This paper resolves the problem of detecting small drones in surveillance videos using deep learning algorithms. Single Shot Detector (SSD) object detection algorithm and MobileNet-v2 architecture as the backbone were used for our experiments. The pretrained model was re-trained on custom drone synthetic dataset by using transfer learning’s fine-tune technique. The results of detecting drone in our experiments were around 90.8%.

Web-based instructional software offers new opportunities for collaborative, task-oriented in-service training. Planning and negotiation of content to adapt a web-based learning resource for nursing is the topic of this paper. We draw from Cultural Historical Activity Theory to elaborate the dialectical relationship of changing and stabilizing organizational practice. Local adaptation to create a domain-specific resource plays out as interactions of orientations and instrumentalities. Our analysis traces how orientations, i.e.

The main objective of this work is to generate a set of exercises to improve the autonomous learning in "Continuum Mechanics" through a virtual platform. Students will have to resolve four exercises autonomously related to the subject developed in class and they will post the solutions on the virtual platform within a deadline. Students will self-correct the exercises and assign a mark according to the rubric indicated by teachers. The work presented herein is based in applying the research done in autonomous learning by the Community of Practice GRAPAU of the RIMA Project (UPC-BarcelonaTech).

This paper deals with translation ambiguity and target polysemy problems together. Two monolingual balanced corpora are employed to learn word co-occurrence for translation ambiguity resolution, and augmented translation restrictions for target polysemy resolution. Experiments show that the model achieves 62.92% of monolingual information retrieval, and is 40.80% addition to the select-all model. Combining the target polysemy resolution, the retrieval performance is about 10.11% increase to the model resolving translation ambiguity only. ...

A method for resolving the ellipses that appear in Japanese dialogues is proposed. This method resolves not only the subject ellipsis, but also those in object and other grammatical cases. In this approach, a machine-learning algorithm is used to select the attributes necessary for a resolution. A decision tree is built, and used as the actual ellipsis resolver. The results of blind tests have shown that the proposed method was able to provide a resolution accuracy of 91.7% for indirect objects, and 78.7% for subjects with a verb predicate. ...

This paper presents a novel ensemble learning approach to resolving German pronouns. Boosting, the method in question, combines the moderately accurate hypotheses of several classifiers to form a highly accurate one. Experiments show that this approach is superior to a single decision-tree classifier. Furthermore, we present a standalone system that resolves pronouns in unannotated text by using a fully automatic sequence of preprocessing modules that mimics the manual annotation process.

This paper describes a Verb Phrase Ellipsis (VPE) detection system, built for robustness, accuracy and domain independence. The system is corpus-based, and uses machine learning techniques on free text that has been automatically parsed. Tested on a mixed corpus comprising a range of genres, the system achieves a 70% F1-score. This system is designed as the first stage of a complete VPE resolution system that is input free text, detects VPEs, and proceeds to find the antecedents and resolve them. ...

We use machine learning techniques to find the best combination of local focus and lexical distance features for identifying the anchor of mereological bridging references. We find that using first mention, utterance distance, and lexical distance computed using either Google or WordNet results in an accuracy significantly higher than obtained in previous experiments.

In this paper, we describe an empirical study of Chinese chunking on a corpus, which is extracted from UPENN Chinese Treebank-4 (CTB4). First, we compare the performance of the state-of-the-art machine learning models. Then we propose two approaches in order to improve the performance of Chinese chunking. 1) We propose an approach to resolve the special problems of Chinese chunking. This approach extends the chunk tags for every problem by a tag-extension function. 2) We propose two novel voting methods based on the characteristics of chunking task.

This paper explores how to apply the notion of caching introduced by Walker (1996) to the task of zero-anaphora resolution. We propose a machine learning-based implementation of a cache model to reduce the computational cost of identifying an antecedent. Our empirical evaluation with Japanese newspaper articles shows that the number of candidate antecedents for each zero-pronoun can be dramatically reduced while preserving the accuracy of resolving it.

While world knowledge has been shown to improve learning-based coreference resolvers, the improvements were typically obtained by incorporating world knowledge into a fairly weak baseline resolver. Hence, it is not clear whether these benefits can carry over to a stronger baseline. Moreover, since there has been no attempt to apply different sources of world knowledge in combination to coreference resolution, it is not clear whether they offer complementary benefits to a resolver.
