Mercury determination

The alumina refining industry is one of a number of global industries that produce process waters containing mercury. The research program detailed in this dissertation focuses on processes for removing mercury from Bayer digestion condensate streams. Bayer refinery digestion condensate is chemically unique because it exhibits high pH and is chemically reducing, thermodynamically favouring the presence of elemental mercury.

This study will be achieved by aiming to: Build the analytical procedure of determination of mercury species in sediment using selective extraction technique . Assess of the reliability of the method of determination of mercury speciation in sediment. Apply the result of study to determine forms of mercury in sediment at a certain area.

With the aim of extending our knowledge on the reaction pathways of Zn-metallothionein (MT) and apo-MT species in the presence of Hg(II), we monitored the titration of Zn7-MT, Zn4 -aMT and Zn3 -bMT proteins, at pH 7 and 3, with either HgCl2or Hg(ClO4 )2 by CD and UV-vis spectr-oscopy.
