  • Lotfi Zadeh, the father of fuzzy logic, coined the phrase computing with words (CWW) to describe a methodology in which the computation objects are words drawn from a natural language. This text explains how to implement CWW for making subjective judgments using the three components of a Perceptual Computer (encoder, CWW engines, and decoder) and then providing detailed applications. The coverage divides the content into application chapters and detail chapters, including brief summaries of detail chapters for readers more interested in applications.

  • We study the challenges raised by Arabic verb and subject detection and reordering in Statistical Machine Translation (SMT). We show that post-verbal subject (VS) constructions are hard to translate because they have highly ambiguous reordering patterns when translated to English. In addition, implementing reordering is difficult because the boundaries of VS constructions are hard to detect accurately, even with a state-of-the-art Arabic dependency parser.

  • Although Subjectivity and Sentiment Analysis (SSA) has been witnessing a flurry of novel research, there are few attempts to build SSA systems for Morphologically-Rich Languages (MRL). In the current study, we report efforts to partially fill this gap. We present a newly developed manually annotated corpus of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) together with a new polarity lexicon.

  • We present a human-robot dialogue system that enables a robot to work together with a human user to build wooden construction toys. We then describe a study in which na¨ve subjects interacted with this ı system under a range of conditions and then completed a user-satisfaction questionnaire. The results of this study provide a wide range of subjective and objective measures of the quality of the interactions.

  • Subjectivity analysis is a rapidly growing field of study. Along with its applications to various NLP tasks, much work have put efforts into multilingual subjectivity learning from existing resources. Multilingual subjectivity analysis requires language-independent criteria for comparable outcomes across languages. This paper proposes to measure the multilanguage-comparability of subjectivity analysis tools, and provides meaningful comparisons of multilingual subjectivity analysis from various points of view. ...

  • This opinion paper discusses subjective natural language problems in terms of their motivations, applications, characterizations, and implications. It argues that such problems deserve increased attention because of their potential to challenge the status of theoretical understanding, problem-solving methods, and evaluation techniques in computational linguistics. The author supports a more holistic approach to such problems; a view that extends beyond opinion mining or sentiment analysis.

  • Current research in automatic subjectivity analysis deals with various kinds of subjective statements involving human attitudes and emotions. While all of them are related to subjectivity, these statements usually touch on multiple dimensions such as non-objectivity1 , uncertainty, vagueness, non-objective measurability, imprecision, and ambiguity, which are inherently different. This paper discusses the differences and relations of six dimensions of subjectivity. Conceptual and linguistic characteristics of each dimension will be demonstrated under different contexts. ...

  • In Sayeed and Szpakowicz (2004), we proposed a parser inspired by some aspects of the Minimalist Program. This incremental parser was designed specifically to handle discontinuous constituency phenomena for NPs in Latin. We take a look at the application of this parser to a specific kind of apparent island violation in Latin involving the extraction of constituents, including subjects, from tensed embedded clauses. We make use of ideas about the left periphery from Rizzi (1997) to modify our parser in order to handle apparently violated subject islands and similar phenomena. ...

  • We describe a method for obtaining subject-dependent word sets relative to some (subjecO domain. Using the subject classifications given in the machine-readable version of Longman's Dictionary of Contemporary English, we established subject-dependent cooccurrence links between words of the defining vocabulary to construct these "neighborhoods". Here, we describe the application of these neighborhoods to information retrieval, and present a method of word sense disambiguation based on these co-occurrences, an extension of previous work. ...

  • In pro-drop languages, the detection of explicit subjects, zero subjects and nonreferential impersonal constructions is crucial for anaphora and co-reference resolution. While the identification of explicit and zero subjects has attracted the attention of researchers in the past, the automatic identification of impersonal constructions in Spanish has not been addressed yet and this work is the first such study.

  • Null subjects are non overtly expressed subject pronouns found in pro-drop languages such as Italian and Spanish. In this study we quantify and compare the occurrence of this phenomenon in these two languages. Next, we evaluate null subjects’ translation into French, a “non prodrop” language. We use the Europarl corpus to evaluate two MT systems on their performance regarding null subject translation: Its-2, a rule-based system developed at LATL, and a statistical system built using the Moses toolkit. ...

  • The order of subject and object is an adequate criterion for distinguishing between them when other grammatical properties are ambiguous.HARPERl AND LEHISTE2 have discussed the order of subjects and predicates in Russian scientific text. Lehiste concludes that "form and function" should be used to distinguish the subject from the predicate of a Russian sentence; although her conclusion may be accepted (subject to assumptions about the value of maintaining customary English order in the output), her dictum must be converted into programmable instructions....

  • Subjectivity and sentiment analysis focuses on the automatic identification of private states, such as opinions, emotions, sentiments, evaluations, beliefs, and speculations in natural language. While subjectivity classification labels text as either subjective or objective, sentiment classification adds an additional level of granularity, by further classifying subjective text as either positive, negative or neutral.

  • Subjectivity and meaning are both important properties of language. This paper explores their interaction, and brings empirical evidence in support of the hypotheses that (1) subjectivity is a property that can be associated with word senses, and (2) word sense disambiguation can directly benefit from subjectivity annotations.

  • This paper explores methods for generating subjectivity analysis resources in a new language by leveraging on the tools and resources available in English. Given a bridge between English and the selected target language (e.g., a bilingual dictionary or a parallel corpus), the methods can be used to rapidly create tools for subjectivity analysis in the new language.

  • Sentiment analysis seeks to identify the viewpoint(s) underlying a text span; an example application is classifying a movie review as “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”. To determine this sentiment polarity, we propose a novel machine-learning method that applies text-categorization techniques to just the subjective portions of the document. Extracting these portions can be implemented using efficient techniques for finding minimum cuts in graphs; this greatly facilitates incorporation of cross-sentence contextual constraints. ...

  • This paper reports work in progress on a sentence generation model which attempts to emulate certain language output patterns of children between the ages of one and one-half and three years. In particular, the model addresses the issue of why missing or phonetically "null" subjects appear as often as they do in the speech of young Englishspeaking children. It will also be used to examine why other patterns of output appear in the speech of children learning languages such as Italian and Chinese.
