  • The objective of this project is to evaluate the statistical properties of three sample designs (e.g., Simple Random Sampling, Systematic Sampling and Probabilities Proportion to Size) in estimating the total area damaged by causal and disorder agents in the state.

  • Endomyocardial fibrosis is a grim disease. It is the most common restrictive cardiomyopathy worldwide, but the exact etiology and pathogenesis both remain unknown. Endomyocardial fibrosis is recurrently associated with chronic eosinophilia and probable dietary, environmental, and infectious factors, which contribute not only to the onset of the disease (an inflammatory process) but also to its progression and maintenance (endomyocardial damage and scar formation).

  • This paper proposes a method to build a command-control automatic system based on solving the weapon target assignment (WTA) problem in a combination of short and medium-range air defense missile systems so that the total damage of targets is maximum and the damage of protected area is minimum.

  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a frequent cause of anterior knee pain predominantly affecting young female patients who do not have significant chondral damage. Development of PFPS is probably multifactorial, involving various knee, hip, and foot kinematic factors.

  • In this study, the main purpose is to develop a multi-unit Level 2 PSA method and apply it to full-power operating six-unit OPR1000. Multi-unit Level 2 PSA method consists of three steps: (1) development of single-unit Level 2 PSA; (2) extracting the mapping data from plant damage state to source term category; and (3) combining multi-unit Level 1 PSA results and mapping fractions.

  • This study proposes to conduct uncertainty analysis of CDR for core damage assessment. First, based on source term estimation, the Monte Carlo (MC) and point-kernel integration methods were used to estimate the probability density function of the CDR under different extents of core damage in accident scenarios with late containment failure. Second, the results were verified by comparing the results of both methods.

  • The results indicated that slope effect leads to up to 37% increase in the damage probability and illustrated that amplification factor had a range of 1.1 to 1.35, moreover, in comparison with slight states, the probability damage growth rate in moderate and extensive states are higher.

  • Considerable number of damaged buildings that are constructed in recent years, is probably because of the lack of enough supervision by IRCEO and other responsible organizations. In this paper, observed damages to RC structures were examined and explained in detail.

  • Legislatures are considering this issue. In 2008, the Maryland legislature amended its title laws to include brands for flood and cosmetic damage to the definition of salvage vehicles. The new law redefines the term “salvage” to mean that cost to repair the damaged vehicle is greater than 75 percent of the vehicle’s pre-damage fair market value. The fiscal note on the bill indicated it will prevent vehicles involved in accidents from being rebuilt and resold under false brands. ...

  • We have used a limited data set—comprised of a sector-level emissions inventory and original emissions estimates for a small sample of industrial facilities—to shed light on the links between maquiladoras, air pollution, and human health in Paso del Norte. We found that particulate emissions from maquiladoras undoubtedly have significant impacts on human health—collectively, these plants are probably responsible for dozens of cases of premature mortality and thousands of cases of respiratory disease each year.

  • We use a series of computational models to estimate health damages attributable to air pollution from these plants, we compare these damages to estimates of damages from non-maquiladora industrial polluters, and we use regression analysis to determine whether the poor suffer disproportionately from maquiladora air pollution. We find that air pollution from maquiladoras has serious consequences for human health, including respiratory disease and premature mortality. However, maquiladoras are clearly not the leading cause of air pollution in Ciudad Juárez and El Paso.

  • Flooding can be caused by both internal and external sources and the impact can be significant, particularly if the water is contaminated, in which case equipment may be damaged beyond repair. Water detection systems should be installed and where possible, water supplies should be routed away from IT equipment. Care should also be given to the siting of IT equipment so that it is protected from local hazards, such as being below ground level in an area prone to flooding.

  • Indoor air pollution poses many challenges to the health pro- fessional. This booklet offers an overview of those challenges, focusing on acute conditions, with patterns that point to par- ticular agents and suggestions for appropriate remedial action. The individual presenting with environmentally associated symptoms is apt to have been exposed to airborne substances originating not outdoors, but indoors. Studies from the United States and Europe show that persons in industrial- ized nations spend more than 90 percent of their time indoors1.

  • With subprime mortgages representing only about 14 percent of the stock of US mortgages, most observers expected rising delinquencies in this segment to be contained at moderate cost. Testifying in July 2007, Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Bernanke estimated that credit losses associated with subprime mortgages would probably total $50 billion to $100 billion. As we now know, what began as a subprime crisis has proved to be wider, deeper, and more damaging than originally thought.

  • Remember that your landlord can still hold YOU, the person who signed the primary lease, responsible for any damage that your subtenant commits. You would then have to sue your subtenant for the money. Note: If you are a subtenant and pay a security deposit to the primary tenant, you may want to get a statement authorizing you to collect the tenant’s deposit from the landlord when you move out. You probably will also want to document the apartment’s condition when you move in.

  • I like playing around with words and letters. You probably know that LASER is an artificial word derived from “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. When starting my lecture on “Laser–Tissue Interactions” I tend to write this derivation on the board. I continue with “LIGHT: Lasers Irradiate Germinated and Healthy Tissues”. Why? Lasers cut everything, if appropriate laser parameters are selected. There is no shield around healthy tissue. And there is no laser that fits all sizes as some clothes do. Lasers never have been some kind of wonder instruments.

  • Epidemiological studies about contagious diseases have two very specific characteristics. The first refers to the object, which is only a source of damage. The second relates to the goals, which aim to determine the relationship between cause and effect, i.e., between exposure and disease. So, even with multifactorial determinants, it's an unidimensional evaluation. Therefore, in a evaluation between exposed and unexposed, the concept of risk approaches the definition of probability.

  • With the great voyages in the fifteenth century it became necessary to evaluate the damage caused by the potential loss of ships. Emerges then the term risk, with connotations similar to what is meant today, but the understanding of its causes was related to accidents and, therefore, impossible to predict. The development of classical probability theory, in the midseventeenth century, to solve problems related to gambling, allowed the start of the process of quantifying the risks, but the causes were still credited to chance....

In these papers, seismic risk is calculated using a dangerous curve represents the probability the generation of earthquake motion and damage curve represents a probability of damage to structures.

  • Bone Marrow Failure—Relationship between PNH and AA It is not unusual that patients with firmly established PNH have a previous history of well-documented AA. On the other hand, sometimes a patient with PNH becomes less hemolytic and more pancytopenic and ultimately has the clinical picture of AA. Since AA is probably an organ-specific autoimmune disease in which T cells cause damage to hematopoietic stem cells, the same may be true of PNH, with the specific proviso that the damage spares PNH stem cells. Skewing of the T cell repertoire in patients with PNH supports this notion.
