The extended finite element method
-
This paper investigates fracture mechanics in particle-reinforced composites by using the extended finite element method enhanced by the consecutive-interpolation quadrilateral element. These composite materials have discontinuous boundaries such as cracks, voids and hard inclusions.

The eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) produces high effectiveness in analyzing the crack propagation in structures. In this approach, the crack is modeled through enrichment functions instead of explicitly represented on the geometry. This study presents an object-oriented program to simulate crack propagation in 2-dimensional structures.

For plate bending problems, using a plate theory to model thin plate structures is less computationally expensive than 3D modelling. The Kirchhoff-Love plate theory is appropriate for analysing thin plate structures. If the membrane deformation is ignored in the KirchhoffLove plate, each node has only one degree of freedom – the deflection.

In this paper, the extended consecutive-interpolation finite element method (XCFEM) is employed to model the mix-mode interface cracks between two dissimilar isotropic materials. This will take advantage of the idea of the consecutive-interpolation finite element method (CFEM) and the enrichment functions of XFEM for discontinuous problems.

The paper aims to extend the ES-MITC3 element, which is an integration of the edge-based smoothed finite element method (ES-FEM) with the mixed interpolation of tensorial components technique for the three-node triangular element (MITC3 element), for the buckling analysis of the FGM variable-thickness plates subjected to mechanical loads.

This paper extends a numerical procedure for limit ananlysis of 3-D structures using node-based smoothed finite element method (NS-FEM) in combination with second-order cone programming (SOCP). The obtained discretization formulation is then cast in a form which involves second-order cone constraints, ensuring that the underlying optimization problem can be solved by highly efficient primaldual interior point algorithm. Furthermore, in the NS-FEM, the system stiffness matrix is computed using the smoothed strains over the smoothing domains associated with nodes.

In this paper, we focus specially on the effective elastic moduli of the heterogeneous composites with arbitrary inclusion shapes. The main idea of this paper is to replace those inhomogeneities by simple equivalent circular (spherical) isotropic inclusions with modified elastic moduli. Available simple approximations for the equivalent circular (spherical) inclusion media then can be used to estimate the effective properties of the original medium.

Photoelastic images of pulsed laser ablation in liquid were simulated by Finite Element Method. The real stress distribution in the target was deduced from the photoelastic images. The simulation result can represent to some extend the photoelastic images taken by the experiment.

In this paper, an extended forming limit stress diagram (EFLSD) was applied to predict neck initiation failure in tube hydroforming of metal bellows. The proposed EFLSD was used in conjunction with ABAQUS/ EXPLICIT finite element simulations to predict the onset of necking in tube hydroforming of metal bellows.

This communication shows how the smoothed finite element method (SFEM) very recently proposed by G.R. Liu [14] can be extended to elasto-plasticity. The SFEM results are in excellent agreement with the finite element (FEM) and analytical results. For the examples treated, the method is quite insensitive to mesh distortion and volumetric locking.

This paper describes some results from the analysis of cracked plates using XFEM. Extended finite elements allow the entire crack to be represented independently of the meshing. The elements employ discontinuous functions and the facture mechanics two dimensional asymptotic crack tip displacement fields. The Fortran source code of Cast3M applies these elements to a set of examples.

In this paper, the finite element for cohesive crack for quasi-brittle materials is constructed by XFEM, which allows incorporation of the displacement discontinuities in the element. The algorithm of construction and procedures for involving this finite element into code Cast3M are presented. The numerical calculations in fracture mechanics are presented to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed implementation.
