  • Fruit leathers are made by drying a very thin layer of fruit puree to produce a product with a texture similar to soft leather. Fruit leather is the product prepared by blending fruit purees or pulp extracted from ripe pulpy fruit, sugar or other nutritive sweeteners and other ingredients and additives desired for product and dehydrated to form sheet which can be cut to desired shape and size. The preservation of fruit leathers depends on their low moisture content, the natural acidity of the fruit used and high sugar contents.

  • In this paper a review is presented on the different techniques used in solar drying, different aspects of solar drying, and modelling of thin layer and deep bed. In addition, principles of operation of solar drying systems and practical examples of some of the available solar dryer systems are presented. The main objective of this review is to identify areas of improvement in solar grain drying systems that need to be addressed for performance enhancement and quality assurance of the relevant solar drying technologies.

  • Drying kinetics of amla- beet root shreds in tray dryer was studied at 55, 65 and 75oC air temperatures. Drying of shreds occurred completely in falling rate period. Four thin layer drying models were fitted to the experimental moisture ratio data. Among the mathematical models investigated, the logarithmic model satisfactorily described the drying behaviour of shreds with high r2 values.

  • Mango is widely preferred because of its excellent flavour and nutritional quality. Mango pulp from Totapuri was extracted and then was subjected to foam mat drying along with 5, 7, and 9% GMS and later with egg white as foaming agents and then dried at temperatures of 60, 70 and 80°C. Weight loss was used to estimate change in moisture ratio with respect to time and effective diffusivity. Three thin layer drying models were fitted to get the best fit model, which was selected on the basis of various statistical parameters.

  • This study investigates the effect of various types of pre-treatments in drying behaviour and quality of slices green mangos in convective drying. This experimental study was carried out with a constant air velocity and thickness (3±0.5 X 103 m) of „dasheri” variety of mangoes, having Julian shape in a laboratory scale dryer at 50, 60 and 70˚C drying air temperatures. Five chemical and one moist heat pre-treatment was done prior to drying to analyse the effect on drying behaviour and quality of final product (aamchur). Dried samples were evaluated for sensory and quality attributes.

  • Thin layer drying behaviour of mint leaves was investigated in axial flow tray dryer at air temperatures of 45, 55 and 65°C. Five different thin layer drying models namely Newton, Page, Logarithmic, Diffusion approach and Henderson and Pabis models were fitted to experimental drying data. The highest adjusted R2 with the lowest standard square error (SSE) and root mean square error (RMSE) were selected as statistical criteria to evaluate how well the tested models fit the drying data.

  • Protein accounts for the major requirement of the human body, as the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of protein is 0.8g.per kilogram of body weight. The Indians have been reported deficient of major amino acids according to the surveys conducted in recent years. Single cell protein (SCP) represents microbial cells grown in mass culture that are harvested as dried cell mass in the form of natural protein concentrate. In the present studies apple, orange, tomato and pea peels were used as the substrate to grow Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains to obtain single cell protein.

  • Two identical prototype solar dryers (direct and indirect) having the same dimensions were used to dry whole mint. Both prototypes were operated under natural and forced convection modes. In the case of the later one the ambient air was entered the dryer with the velocity of 4.2 m s1 . The effect of flow mode and the type of solar dryers on the drying kinetics of whole mint were investigated. Ten empirical models were used to fit the drying curves; nine of them represented well the solar drying behavior of mint.

  • After the brushing is performed, the brush is rolled across the slide in an area approximately 2.5 centimeters in diameter (the size of a quarter) to produce a thin evenly layered smear. 8 The slide should be fixed immediately. Immediate fixation of the cellular sample is necessary to prevent air- drying which obscures cellular detail and compromises specimen evaluation. Fixation can be by immersion (preferably) or spray fixation. Immersion fixation consists of placing the smear into 95% alcohol or its equivalent.

  • The word soil occurs many times in this little book. In agriculture this word is used to describe the thin layer of surface earth that, like some great blanket, is tucked around the wrinkled and age-beaten form of our globe. The harder and colder earth under this surface layer is called the subsoil. It should be noted, however, that in waterless and sun-dried regions there seems little difference between the soil and the subsoil. Plants, insects, birds, beasts, men,—all alike are fed on what grows in this thin layer of soil. If some wild flood in sudden wrath could...
