  2. Read the following paragraph and choose the best answer for each question. In this area of increasing global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies, we must begin to put a greater priority on harnessing alternative energy sources. Fortunately, there are a number of readily available, renewable resources that are both cost- e ffective and earth- friendly. Two such resources are solar power and geothermal power. Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could meet the needs of worldwide e nergy consumption 6,000 times over. And solar energy is easily harnessed through the use of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity. In the United States alone, more than 100,000 homes are equipped with solar electric systems in the form of solar panels or solar roof tiles. And in other parts of the world, including many developing countries, the use of solar systems is growing steadily. Another alternative e nergy source, which is abundant in specific geographical areas, is geothermal power, which creates energy by tapping heat from below the surface of the earth. Hot water and steam that are trapped in underground pools are pumped to the surface and used to run a generator, which produces electricity. Geothermal energy is 50,000 times more abundant than the entire known supply of fossil fuel resources. And as with solar power, the technology needed to utilize geothermal energy is fairly simple. A prime example of effective geothermal use is in Iceland, a region of high geothermal activity, where over 80 percent of private homes are heated by geothermal power. Solar and geothermal energy are just two of a number of promising renewable alternatives to conventional energy sources. The time is long overdue to invest in the development and use of alternative energy on a global scale. 11) What is the main topic of this passage? A. The benefits of solar and wind power over conventional energy resources. B. How energy resources are tapped from nature. C. Two types of alternative energy sources that should be further utilized. D. Because global warming has increased the amount of sunlight that reaches the earth. C. Because they are free and available worldwide. D. Because conventional energy sources are being depleted, and they cause environmental damage. 13) According to the passage, what can be inferred about solar roof tiles? A. They are being used in many undeveloped countries B. They can convert geothermal power to electricity C. They are more expensive than solar panels D. They contain photovoltaic cells. 14) According to the passage, how is solar energy production similar to geothermal energy production? A. They both require fairly simple technology B. They both use heat from the earth’s surface C. They both require the use of a generator. D. They are both conventional and costly. 15) According to the passage, which of the following is true about solar power? A. There is very little of it available in Iceland B. 5. Read the following paragraph and choose the best answer for each question. As many as one thousand years ago in the Southwest, the Hopi and Zuni Indians of North America were building with adobe i.e. sun-baked brick plastered with mud. Their homes looked remarkably like modern apartment houses. Some were four floors high and contained quarters for perhaps a thousand people, along with storerooms for grain and other goods. These buildings were usually put up against cliffs, both to make construction easier and for defense against enemies. They were really villages in themselves, as later Spanish explorers must have realized since they called them “pueblos”, which is Spanish for towns. The people of the pueblos raised what are called “the three sisters” - corn, beans, and squash. They made excellent pottery and wove marvelous baskets, some so fine that they could hold water. The Southwest has always been a dry country, where water is scarce. The Hopi and Zuni brought water from streams to their fields and gardens through irrigation ditches. Water was so important that it played a major role in their religion. They developed elaborate ceremonies and religious rituals to bring rain. The way of life of less – settled groups was simpler and more strongly influenced by nature. Small tribes such as the Shoshone and Ute wandered the dry and mountainous lands between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. They gathered seeds and hunted small animals such as rabbits and snakes. In the Far North the ancestors of today’s Inuit hunted seals, walruses, and the great whales. They lived right on the frozen seas in shelters called igloos built of blocks of packed snow. When summer came, they fished for salmon and hunted the lordly caribou. The Cheyenne, Pawnee and Sioux tribes, known as the Plains Indians, lived on the grasslands between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. They hunted bison, commonly called the buffalo. Its meat was the chief food of these tribes, and its hide was used to make their clothing and the covering of their tents and tips. 71) What does the passage mainly discuss? A.
