Introduction Approaches and methods continue to play a key role in shaping our approach to foreign and second language teaching and learning, in particular to English for speakers of other languages. English Teaching methodology has also assured an important course for English - major students in Dai nam University. Students are learning to become an English teacher need to understand approaches and methods of teaching, plan the teaching, techniques in teaching, ways of managing students and the alike. This book aims at helping B.A English- major students in Dai Nam University to have a comprehensive picture of English teaching methodology. It is intended for the 3rd year B.A English- major students in Dai nam University. Specifically, it is the course book for the course “English teaching methodology”. It aims to provide students with an introduction to the basic principles and theory of English language teaching. It addresses the major approaches and methods of ELT to learners. The book is composed of 3 parts with 11 units, each one consists of a number of topics. Part 1 focuses on basic aspects of teaching English: The teachers, the learners, the teaching materials, methods of teaching, planning in teaching and testing. It describes the various approaches and methods that existed over the years and 11

Part 2 focuses on principles and suggested ways of teaching language systems: Pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. In part 3, the authors consider various aspects related to teaching language skills- listening, speaking, reading and writing. The strengths of this book are: clear, systematic and pratical. It has clear table of contents, clear & cohesive organization of each unit and information is written at the level that students can understand & use. Together with theory, students will have chance to expose to different types of tasks to make their learning effective. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dai Nam University who gives us the chance to write this book. It gives us great pleasure as well to thank all the teachers at the scientific board of English Faculty in Dai Nam University for their excellent contributions, and great editorial abilities throughout the process of writing this. Subsequent course: ESL classroom techniques and practice. 7. Course description: This course provides an introduction to the basic principles and theory of English language teaching. Specifically, it addresses basic aspects of teaching - the learners, the teachers, teaching materials, approaches and methods of TESOL, planning and testing. It also refers to principles of teaching the WHAT (Grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary) and skills - the HOW (listening, speaking, reading and writing). At the end of each unit students will have practical exercises to reinfore what they have learnt in the unit. 8. Course objectives: By the end of this course, students should be able to: 13

Course structure and teaching method This course is organized as ONE section per week, incoorperating lectures, tutorials (with students’discussion and seminars) and independent study. Active preparation for and participation in all class activities are essential. Students will develop their knowledge of the field and intellectual skills through reading, reflection and discussion. To get the most of this course book, with each unit you can: - Read the main aim of the unit to identify what you are going to study and what you need to achieve after studying it. - Read and do the complete tasks provided in each unit. Do not forget to read and remember the reminder and summary which give you the main points of each unit. 14
