A barrier to native English teachers

In the Indonesian context, English is considered a local subject and there is no mandated curriculum for English in elementary schools. Meanwhile, English has been a compulsory subject taught at the secondary school level. The present study aims to explore barriers to teaching English experienced by non-native English teachers in Indonesian secondary schools and policy recommendations.

When teachers and students come from different cultures, many perplexities can arise. These can be due to different social positions of teachers and students in the two societies, to differences in expected teacher/student and student/student interaction, or to differences in the relevance of the curricula of the two societies (Hofstede). Therefore, it has been assumed that a teacher must be aware of socio-cultural differences to operate effectively in the classroom.
