Elderly care service projects (ECSPs) aim to provide care services with the help of market forces on the supply side to satisfy the huge demand of the elderly. Subsidies play an important role in motivating the investors to invest in the ECSPs immediately. The optimal subsidy scheme should balance the policy costs and the investors’ interests.

Investing in education is generally considered as a promising strategy to fight poverty and increase prosperity. This applies to all levels of an economy reaching from individuals to local communities and countries and has a global perspective as well. However, high-quality education is often costly and not available anytime anywhere. Therefore, any promising concept that might help to democratize education is worth pursuing, in a sense that it makes education accessible for everybody without any restrictions.

The following section presents key summary statistics on education, both on the supply and demand side. The fourth section presents our empirical estimates of enrollment correlates in rural areas. The final section concludes with a summary of findings, recommendations, and suggestions for future analysis.

We focus on four national characteristics to explain the size of the mutual fund industry across countries: law and regulation; demand characteristics; supply side factors; and the nature of the securities markets. Countries with a stronger judicial system, more stringent regulatory approval and disclosure requirements for funds tend to have a larger fund industry. This suggests that stronger regulation may be beneficial to the fund industry.

In this research report, Aliou Diagne and Manfred Zeller examine the case of Malawi, where several institutions offer credit to poor, smallholder farmers to allow them to buy fertilizer, seeds, and other inputs for growing maize and tobacco as a way of helping raise incomes. Surprisingly, they find that farmers who participated in these credit programs ended up with less net crop income than those who did not.

A number of recent studies have used GIS analysis to measure the ecological factors contributing to the provision of certain services (Naidoo and Ricketts 2006; Beier, Patterson et al. 2008; Nelson, Mendoza et al. 2009).
