The propensity score matching (PSM) method was used on the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey (VHLSS) 2020 database to examine this impact.

Access to formal credit of agricultural cooperatives in Vietnam: Obstacles and international lessons
Vietnam has about 14.816 active agricultural cooperatives, making for 65.23% of all cooperatives in the country. Agricultural cooperatives play an unchangeable economic and social role. However, despite their importance, most Vietnamese agricultural cooperatives are small sized, and only 2% of them have access to formal credit, which hindering enormously their development.

This study examines the impact of formal credit access on household income in rural Vietnam. The study applies propensity score matching (PSM) method to Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey (VHLSS) 2020 dataset to estimate the impact of credit access on income per capita and income from agriculture of rural households. The study has specific contributions when considering forms of credit in rural Vietnam through formal, semi-formal, and informal credit sectors.

Recently, the credit supply from the formal credit sector to the rural area has increased considerably. However, the credit supply to agriculture is still far from the actual credit need and mismatching with the economic and social contribution of agriculture sector to the rural area. Using data from the household survey in Hai Duong, finding of this paper shows that the credit supply from the formal sector did not meet the credit need of animal production households.
