The results revealed that ME treatment decreased body weight and fat mass including visceral adipose tissue, epididymal white adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue. The results suggest that ME is effective in reducing weight and adipose tissue mass in HFD-fed mice.

Our data suggest that a restricted high-fat diet feeding shows an obvious effect on the change of body weight as well as on the alteration of adipose tissue size and weight. Hence, the restricted high-fat diet feeding may be used as a promise method to induce obese model at least partly in mouse.

Liver metabolism is influenced by hormones and nutrients. Amino acids such as glutamine or leucine induce an anabolic response, which resembles that of insulin in muscle and adipose tissue. In this work, the signalling pathways and the effects of insulin were compared to those of glutamine and leucine in isolated hepatocytes from normal and streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

Aquaporin adipose (AQPap), which we identi®ed from human adipose tissue, is a glycerol channel in adipocyte [Kishida et al. (2000) J. Biol. Chem.275, 20896±20902]. In the current study, we determined the genomic structure of the human AQPap gene, and identi®ed three AQPap-like genes that resembled (95%)AQPap, with little expression in human tissues.

Prohibitin (PHB-1) is a highly conserved protein involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and function. It is secreted in lipid droplets from adipocytes and is present in the circulation. In adipose tissue it functions as a membrane receptor and can target binding partners to the mitochondria.

Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a common food pollutant that causes DNA adduct formation and is carcinogenic. The report of a positive correlation between human plasma B[a]P levels and body mass index, together with B[a]P’s lipophilicity, led us to test for possible adverse effects of B[a]P on adipose tissue.

The protective effect of early pregnancy against breast cancer can be attrib-uted to the transition from undifferentiated cells in the nulliparous to the differentiated mature cells during pregnancy. Considerable evidence sug-gests strongly that the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of adipose breast tissue is inversely associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

The specific features of the plasticity of adult stem cells are largely unknown. Recently, we demonstrated the hepatic differentiation of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs). To identify the genes responsible for hepatic differentiation, we examined the gene expres-sion profiles of AT-MSC-derived hepatocytes (AT-MSC-Hepa) using several microarray methods.

Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ made up of adipocytes, various stro-mal cells, resident and infiltrating immune cells, and an extensive endo-thelial network. Adipose secretory products, collectively referred to as adipokines, have been identified as contributors to the negative conse-quences of adipose tissue expansion that include cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

There is a tightly regulated interaction, which is well-conserved in evolution, between the metabolic and immune systems that is deranged in states of over- or under-nutrition. Obesity, an energy-rich condition, is characterized by the activation of an inflammatory process in metaboli-cally active sites such as adipose tissue, liver and immune cells.

Obesity and its associated disorders, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, have now reached epidemic proportions in the Western world, resulting in dramatic increases in healthcare costs. Understanding the pro-cesses and metabolic perturbations that contribute to the expansion of adi-pose depots accompanying obesity is central to the development of appropriate therapeutic strategies.

Obesity is a low-grade chronic inflammatory disease associated with an increased number of macrophages (adipose tissue macrophages) in adipose tissue. Within the adipose tissue, adipose tissue macrophages are the major source of visfatin⁄pre-B-cell colony-enhancing factor⁄nicotinamide phos-phoribosyl transferase.

Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is uniquely expressed at high levels in cancer cells and adipose tissue. The objectives of this study were to identify, purify and validate soy FAS inhibitory peptides and to predict their binding modes. Soy peptides were isolated from hydrolysates of purifiedb-conglyci-nin by co-immunoprecipitation and identified using LC-MS⁄MS.

Lipocalin-type prostaglandin (PG) D synthase is expressed in adipose tissues and involved in the regulation of glucose tolerance and atherosclero-sis in type 2 diabetes. However, the physiological roles of PGD2 in adipo-genesisin vivo are not clear, as lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase can also act as a transporter for lipophilic molecules, such as retinoids.

Background: Dercum’s disease (DD) is characterised by obesity and chronic pain ( 3 months) in the adipose tissue. The pathogenesis of DD is unknown, but inflammatory components have been proposed. In previous reports and studies, an inconsistent picture of the histological appearance of the adipose tissue in DD has been described. The aim of this investigation was to examine the histological appearance of adipose tissue in patients with DD, with particular focus on inflammatory signs. Methods: Fat biopsies were sampled from painful regions from 53 patients with DD.
