Clean water for drinking and cooking has been a serious issue in rural areas of Vietnam, which is mainly due to high-cost treatment of the available water sources in such areas. In order to reduce the treatment cost, iron impregnated ceramic granules (IICGs) was synthesized using a mixture of locally available montmorillonite and crushed rice husk (with the rice husk size < 0.2 mm, IICGs size 0.2 mm – 0.45 mm).

Keramzite gravel is widely used in construction and agriculture. Keramzite is used as material to produce light-weight concrete and fixed bed for the growing vegetables. This material is now known as a completely new and cheap absorbent material. Surprisingly, the adsorption capacity of the reactive dyes on the Keramzite gravel has been successful and is the precondition for the production of other gravel particles with higher toxicity.

This study aims to characterize and investigate steel slag for the removal of its persistent organic pollutants (measured as COD) from pulp mill wastewater. Steel slag and its NaOH-modified states were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore size, and volume analysis.

The influence of heterogeneity, however, cannot be studied experimentally. In this study, we employed two reversed phase columns with different retention mechanisms to show that by serially coupling the columns, the obtained thermodynamic parameters are not related to the results obtained on the respective individual columns.

Elucidation of protein transport mechanism in ion exchanges is essential to model separation performance. In this work we simulate intraparticle adsorption profiles during batch adsorption assuming typical process conditions for pore, solid and parallel diffusion. Artificial confocal laser scanning microscopy images are created to identify apparent differences between the different transport mechanisms.

Size exclusion chromatography has become an essential tool for the protein therapeutics industry. Conceptually, it is a simple form of chromatography that is driven by entropy and sieving effects. An ideal size exclusion column would exhibit no adsorptive interactions between its internal surfaces and the solutes being analysed, but that is not easily achieved.

In this study, natural clinoptilolite was modified by saponin and Brij 35 surfactants to remove diethylstilbestrol (DES) from wastewater in batch and continuous systems. The optimum pH, amount of adsorbent, contact time, and temperature were 11, 10 g/L, 12 h, and 35°C, respectively, for the process. The equilibrium data agreed well with the Langmuir isotherm for natural clinoptilolite (NC), natural clinoptilolite modified by Brij 35 (NC-Brij), and natural clinoptilolite modified by saponin surfactants (NC-saponin) compared to other isotherms.

In this study, we prepared activated red mud by thermal and acid treatment method and applied it for adsorption of H2S in air. The red mud was activated under different temperatures (i.e., 200, 400, 600, and 800 oC for 4 h), types of acid (i.e., H2SO4 and HCl), and acid concentrations (i.e., 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 M). The produced materials were then applied for H2S removal in air with concentration of 90 – 110 mg/m3 using a fix-bed adsorption column test.

Accelerated exploitation of oil and gas resources planned and implemented by ONGC and BGEIPL in west coast offshore region would result into stress particularly on marine environment. The long term physical, chemical and biological changes due to routine discharges from offshore installations can best be assessed through a study on accumulation of hydrocarbons and heavy metals in fishes, plankton and sediments which together form biotic and abiotic components of marine environment.

The ability of the agricultural residue of sugarcane bagasse to serve as an absorbent material used to remove Ciprofloxacin (CIP), one of strong Fluoroquinolone antibiotic from aqueous solutions in fixed-bed columns was investigated. The properties of biochar sugarcane bagasse were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy before and after modification.

Performance of a column bed device packed with specially fabricated Plaster of Paris (POP) pellets was evaluated for the removal of a potentially toxic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Pyrene (Pyr). The effect of initial Pyr concentration, flow rate, and adsorbent dosage was investigated on Pyr adsorption characteristics of two types of pellets (uncoated and adsorbent coated). Maximum Bed capacity (Mb), percentage removal and equilibrium Pyr uptake were calculated and breakthrough curves were plotted.

A low cost column mode device was designed and fabricated for removal of trivalent and pentavalent arsenic from water. The chemically modified chitosan was entrapped in polyurethane matrix and used as a column bed for adsorption for both the forms of arsenic. The chemical modification of chitosan was achieved by pre-treatment with ferrous oxide manganese oxide. The column bed exhibited 75% of As(III) and 72 % of As(V) removal at 1000 ppb concentration.

Bridelia micrantha commonly known as coastal golden leaf is a member of the family Phyllanthaceae. In preliminary studies, nine fractions, named F1- F9, were obtained by fractionating the crude methanol extract of the stem bark of Bridelia micrantha using column chromatographic techniques. The F6 fraction was found to be the most active when tested for the antibacterial activity. This study is thus aimed at investigating the effect of fractionation on antibacterial activity of F6 fraction.

The global issue associated with the health of environment and human is the quality of water. A serious threat to the aquatic environment through anthropogenic activities is the heavy metal pollution. Therefore, a suitable cleanup technology should be there for making our environment pollution free. This study reports the sorption behaviour of Cr(III) from aqueous solution by water hyacinth biomass through fixed bed column experiment at bed height of 25 cm, initial Cr (III) concentration of 500 mg L-1 and varying flow rates (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 ml minute-1 ) at optimum pH of 4.0.

Sorption of uranium (VI) from aqueous solution onto powdered corn cob has been carried out using batch and fixed-bed technique. The experimental results in batch technique were fitted well with pseudo second-order kinetics model. In the fixed bed technique, Thomas and Bohart–Adams models were evaluated by linear regression analysis for U(VI) uptake in different flow rates, bed heights and initial concentrations. The column experimental data were fitted well with Thomas mode (r 2 = 0.999), but the Bohart–Adams model (r 2 = 0.911), predicted poor performance of fixed-bed column.

● Adsorption chromatography • The stationary phase is an adsorbent (like silica gel or any other silica-based packing) • The separation is based on repeated adsorption-desorption steps. ● Normal-phase chromatography • The stationary bed is strongly polar in nature (e.g., silica gel), and the mobile phase is nonpolar (such as n-hexane or tetrahydrofuran). • Polar samples are retained on the polar surface of the column packing longer than less polar materials.
