The switch from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis in proliferating cancer cells, even under aerobic conditions, has been shown first in 1926 by Otto Warburg. Today this phenomenon is known as the “Warburg effect” and recognized as a hallmark of cancer.

Melatonin has a long history of studies which confirm its ability to inhibit cancer growth. Melatonin is present in high concentrations in the mitochondria of normal cells but is likely absent from the mitochondria of cancer cells, at least when isolated from tumors harvested during the day.

The control of energy metabolism is fundamental for cell growth and function and anomalies in it are implicated in complex diseases and ageing. Metabolism in yeast cells can be manipulated by supplying different carbon sources: Yeast grown on glucose rapidly proliferates by fermentation, analogous to tumour cells growing by aerobic glycolysis, whereas on non-fermentable carbon sources metabolism shifts towards respiration.

Finding novel cholinesterase inhibitors that would be able to cross the blood–brain barrier, have favorable pharmacokinetic parameters, and reduce hepatotoxicity along with other side effects has been the main focus of investigations dealing with Alzheimer disease. In this study we evaluated cholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant activity of seven oxazole derivatives. These compounds have been efficiently and sustainably prepared by photochemical electrocyclization reaction.

Tumor-stroma metabolic relationship based on lactate shuttle can sustain prostate cancer progression
Cancer cell adopts peculiar metabolic strategies aimed to sustain the continuous proliferation in an environment characterized by relevant fluctuations in oxygen and nutrient levels. Monocarboxylate transporters MCT1 and MCT4 can drive such adaptation permitting the transport across plasma membrane of different monocarboxylic acids involved in energy metabolism.

Non-fermenting gram negative bacilli (NFGNB) are a group of aerobic, non spore forming bacilli. They either do not use carbohydrates as a source of energy or degrade them through metabolic pathways other than fermentation. They are ubiquitous in nature. Although they are commonly considered to be environmental contaminants, they have emerged as important nosocomial pathogens. Aim of this study was to characterize the prevalence of NFGNB distribution from various clinical isolates and to evaluate their antibiotic sensitivity patterns.

The metabolism of cancer cells is often reprogrammed by dysregulation of metabolic enzymes. Transketolase-like 1 (TKTL1) is a homodimeric transketolase linking the pentose-phosphate pathway with the glycolytic pathway. It is generally silenced at a transcriptional level in somatic tissues.

Cancer cells exhibit an altered metabolism, which is characterized by a preference for aerobic glycolysis more than mitochondrial oxidation of pyruvate. Mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 (MPC1) and mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 2 (MPC2) play a bottleneck role by transporting pyruvate into mitochondrial through the mitochondrial inner membrane.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with obesity and various obesity-associated pathological conditions including glucose intolerance. 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a precursor of heme metabolites, is a natural amino acid synthesized in the mitochondria, and various types of cytochromes containing heme contribute to aerobic energy metabolism.

It is suggested that adipocytokines secreted by adipose tissue play a role in the development of obesity-related complications and diabetes. Regular aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of metabolic complications in obese type 2 diabetic subjects. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of aerobic versus resistance training on insulin resistance, adipocytokines and inflammatory cytokine in obese type 2 diabetic patients.

In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was chosen to culture for examination of its influences on microorganisms of seafood wastewater in particular aerobic bacteria, Coliform and E. coli. The microalgae cultivation was realized in Erlenmeyer flasks containing seafood wastewater medium.

We previously reported that GTS1 is involved in regulating ultradian oscillations of the glycolytic pathway induced by cyanide in cell suspensions as well as oscillations of energy metabolism in aerobic continuous cultures. Here, we screened a yeast cDNA library for proteins that bind to Gts1p using the yeast two-hybrid system and cloned multiple TDH cDNAs encoding the glycolytic enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH).

Aerobic metabolism of phenylalanine in most bacteria proceeds via oxidation to phenylacetate. Surprisingly, the further metabolism of phenylacetate has not been elucida-ted, even in well studied bacteria such as Escherichia coli. The only committed step is the conversion of phenylacetate into phenylacetyl-CoA. The paaoperon ofE. coliencodes 14 polypeptides involved in the catabolismof phenylacetate. We have found thatE.
