Microplastics are regarded as an emerging threat to water and other environments. The increasing use of plastics in agricultural cultivation has led to higher risks and more dangerous pollution of agricultural water. However, microplastics in agricultural water in Vietnam have neither been studied nor documented in any publication.

This study evaluated the impact of pollution sources on the Ma River Basin in Son La Province, Vietnam, using data from local reports, statistical yearbooks, and scholarly literature. The study recommended implementing centralized wastewater treatment systems in priority areas, promoting sustainable land management practices, and supporting environmentally friendly agricultural and livestock farming methods.

The Mekong Delta is regarded as the granary of Vietnam, with an annual production of 24.1 million tons (2023). Currently, fresh paddy is transported directly from farmers’ fields to drying facilities or rice mills. Given the extensive river and canal system in the Mekong Delta, the majority of paddy (up to 92%) is transported by barges.

Pest control practices in the vegetable crops have been heavily dominated by the routine use of broad-spectrum insecticides to control pests. Concerns have emerged about the adverse consequences of over use of pesticide. These consequences include short and longterm health hazards, contamination and environmental degradation. To minimize the pest losses farmers heavily depend on the chemical pesticides and accessing pest management information from the pesticide dealers due to weak state extension support system.
