  • The extracts from 30 species of the green algae were examined for hemagglutination activity with a variety of different animal and human erythrocytes which were untreated and treated with enzymes. The hemagglutination activities of the green algal hemagglutinins were stable in a wide range of pH and temperature, and independent on divalent cations.

  • Long-term evolution of sex chromosomes is a dynamic process shaped by gene gain and gene loss. Sex chromosome gene traffic has been studied in XY and ZW systems but no detailed analyses have been carried out for haploid phase UV sex chromosomes. Here, we explore sex-specific sequences of seven brown algal species to understand the dynamics of the sex-determining region (SDR) gene content across 100 million years of evolution.

  • This is the first record of a pycnogonid for the Iranian coast. It is also the first record of an Endeis, and of Endeis biseriata, for the waters of the Gulf of Oman. A single specimen was collected in an algal bed of Padina sp., along Chabahar Bay, in February 2017. It is deposited in the Zoology Museum of the University of Hormozgan. E. biseriata is probably a native Indo-Pacific species that now has a wide world distribution, being probably pantropical. Morphological and ecological notes, as well as the distribution range of E.

  • A series of batch lab-scale experiments were performed to investigate the performance of dead phosphorylated algal biomass of Spirogyra species for the bioadsorption of Cu +2 ions from aqueous solutions. FT-IR and SEM analyses were performed to characterize the phosphorylated and raw algae. The SEM analysis indicated that the phosphorus content increases by about 5 times. The isotherm equilibrium data indicated that phosphorylation enhances the removal of Cu +2 from water by about 20%. The experimental isotherms fit well to Langmuir models with R 2 values close to 0.99.

  • The taxa in this paper represent 8 classes, 16 orders, 20 families, 22 genera and 22 species based on the latest algal taxonomical nomenclature. Among these taxa, the existence of a rare filamentous cyanobacteria, Planktothrix compressa (Utermöhl) Anagnostidis et Komárek is described for the first time in the Philippines.

  • The algal flora of 17 lakes and 1 pond in the Artabel Lakes Nature Park were investigated during two summer seasons (2013 and 2016). In total, 26 desmid taxa were found and identified as new records for the desmid flora of Turkey based on their morphotaxonomic characteristics and ecological preferences. The taxa identified belong to the genera Actinotaenium (1), Closterium (1), Cosmarium (15), Micrasterias (1), Spondylosium (1), Staurastrum (5), Teilingia (1), and Tetmemorus (1). Morphotaxonomy, ecology, and distribution of each species were discussed in detail.

  • Skeletonema species are prominent primary producers, some of which can also cause massive harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters under specific environmental conditions. Nevertheless, genomic information of Skeletonema species is currently limited, hindering advanced research on their role as primary producers and as HAB species. Mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) has been extensively used as “super barcode” in the phylogenetic analyses and comparative genomic analyses. However, of the 21 accepted Skeletonema species, full-length mtDNAs are currently available only for a single species, S.

  • Cryptophytes are an ecologically important group of algae comprised of phototrophic, heterotrophic and osmotrophic species. This lineage is of great interest to evolutionary biologists because their plastids are of red algal secondary endosymbiotic origin. Cryptophytes have a clear phylogenetic affinity to heterotrophic eukaryotes and possess four genomes: host-derived nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, and plastid and nucleomorph genomes of endosymbiotic origin.

  • Lichens, encompassing 20,000 known species, are symbioses between specialized fungi (mycobionts), mostly ascomycetes, and unicellular green algae or cyanobacteria (photobionts). Here we describe the first parallel genomic analysis of the mycobiont Cladonia grayi and of its green algal photobiont Asterochloris glomerata.

  • Quince (Cydonia oblonga) is a hardy tree and very less susceptible to diseases. Therefore, used as a dwarfing rootstock for pear, depending on the scion desired and characteristics of the production area. Algal leaf spot is a foliar disease most commonly seen in warm humid climate or in greenhouse conditions. The spots were circular or blotchy in shape, 1-5mm in size and were somewhat raised from the plant surface. The edges of the spots were wavy or feathered.

  • Our study focused on S. crassifolium, one of the most abundant tropical brown algal species in South Central region of Vietnam. To our knowledge there had been no report on the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging effect of its methanolic extract. The purpose of this study was to isolate and structurally elucidate the antioxidant component in dichlorofluorescein assay from S. Crassifolium methanolic extract.

  • Among the members of Halymeniaceae family, Grateloupia sensu lato occupies the largest composition in species. Classification based on morphological traits is difficult due to the highly variable terete to blade-like thalli among the members of this genus that usually leads to misidentification. Molecular systematics has been applied to classify Grateloupia sensu lato so that the taxonomists acquire a better understanding of the species diversity in general.

  • Various microalgae species have high amount of protein and lipid level that is why this is now a days consider as one of the main reasons of an unconventional source of this compound. Spirulina platensis is one of the richest protein sources of microbial origin, having similar protein levels when compared to pulse and animal protein sources. The use of Spirulina platensis in food can bring benefits to human health owing to its chemical composition, as it has high levels of vitamins, minerals, secondary metabolites, essential fatty acids, amino acids and pigments.

  • The algae are one among the biomass energy source which can be promising. The microalgae are the diverse organisms which can inhabit in different climatic conditions and adapt themselves and perpetuate forming their own niche. There is need to improve the local flora for biomass and lipid content instead of culturing exotic species. Chlorella the green microalgae, was isolated from fresh water and was characterized through molecular studies using 18s rRNA homology. The study has revealed that isolated species belong to Chlorophytes (green microalgae).
