Fly ash is an active mineral admixture used commonly in the production of blended Portland cement. Fly ash improves many important properties of cement and cement concrete: increasing late compressive strength, increasing sulfate resistance, reducing heat of hydration, reducing alkali-silica reaction and reducing water permeability.

To understand the architecture of the plant cell wall, it is of importance to understand both structural characteristics of cell wall polysaccharides and interactions between these polysaccharides. Interactions between polysaccharides were studied in the residue after water and chelating agent extraction by sequential extractions with H2O and alkali.

Glutamic functionalized water-soluble perylene diimide, N, N’-di (l-glutamic amine)-perylene-3,4,9,10- tetracarboxylic diimide (GAPTCD) has three absorbance maxima at 469, 498, and 534 nm and two emission peaks at 550 and 587 nm. Owing to the highly negative electrostatic potential of the perylene plane, the perylene derivative showed good water solubility and strong fluorescence in alkali and neutral solutions. Both the absorbance and emission intensities decreased with the decreasing of pH from 9.66 to 5.92.

A field investigation was conducted during 2004-2005 at Karanja Ramzanpur, village in Purna valley in Vidarbha region. The experimental was laid out in Randomized Block Design, consisting of seven treatments i.e. 100 % RD of NPK, 50 % RD of NPK, PSB 10 kg ha-1 , crop residue @ 2 t ha-1 and alkali water irrigation passed through gypsum bed (30 cm thickness). The initial pHs, ECe, SAR and ESP representative soil varied from 8.51 to 8.40, 1.06 to 1.18, 15.17 to 9.22, 18.36 to 12.19 respectively.

Immersion of painted idols and addition of organic wastes in the lake water, as a part of religious activities, is a common religious practice in India. These activities add to the contamination of water with alkali, alkaline earth metals and heavy metals and therefore, degrade water quality and limit conservation of good quality water in the lakes. In this pretext, periodic analysis of Madiwala and Lalbagh lake water were carried out to investigate the impact of idol immersion activities on the lake water quality.

Starches from the wheat (UP262, PBW343), rice (PB2, PD19) and millets (Finger millet VL Mandua-352, Barnyard millet VL Madira-207, Foxtail millet DHFT-109-3) were isolated by alkali extraction method and characterized for morphologically and biochemical properties. The morphological properties of starch granules were studied by scanning electron microscope. The infrared spectroscopy is sensitive to structural changes on starch macromolecule, such as helicoidal chain conformation, crystallinity, retrogradation and water content.

An experiment with a total of 36 rice entries consisted of 28 cross and eight parental lines were evaluated to estimate the variability parameters for 10 yield attributing character, 6 physical quality traits; 8 cooking and chemical quality traits of rice cultures. Analysis of variance revealed the existence of significant differences among cultures for all traits studied. High PCV coupled with GCV was recorded for gel consistency and alkali spreading value revealed wider variability for these traits.

The treated industrial wastewater has been, continuously used for crop production in the water scares region of our country. Irrigation with agro-based industrial wastewater (treated paper mill effluent) though it initially increased the yield of many crops, over a period; it deteriorates the soil quality by addition of soluble salts in soil profile results in deflocculating of soil structure, reduced infiltration and waterlogging leads to yield reduction in some crops under poor management condition.

In this study, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal rate by different alkali and oxidative absorbing solutions (i.e., NaOH, Ca(OH)2, NaOCl, Ca(OCl)2, and water) was compared using a packed absorption column. The results showed that NaOH solution was the suitable absorbent based on its removal efficiency, mass transfer coefficient, and overall enhancement factor.

The possibilities of dissolving grade pulp production from poplar by an ethanol-water process were investigated. The effects of ethanol ratio, cooking temperature and acid catalyst ratio on unbleached, bleached and alkali-purified pulps were studied. It was seen that catalyst ratios exceeding 0.01% caused serious yield and viscosity losses.
