Inflammation, both local and systemic, is a hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Inflammatory mediators such as TNFa and GM-CSF are secreted by lung epithelium, alveolar macrophages and other inflammatory cells and are thought to be important contributors in the pathogenesis of COPD.

Hyperoxia downregulates the tight junction (TJ) proteins of the alveolar epithelium and leads to bar‑ rier dysfunction. Previous study has showed that STE20/SPS1-related proline/alanine-rich kinase (SPAK) interferes with the intestinal barrier function in mice.

Sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the injury of alveolar epithelium and pulmonary endothelial cells. This study aimed to investigate the regulation of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) taurine up-regulated gene 1 (TUG1) in a murine ALI model and in primary murine pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

The objective of this study was to explore the gross morphological and histolmorphometric observations in the mammary gland of Boer graded local goats in India. The present study was conducted in adult lactating and nonlactating (n =6 each) Boer local she-goats. The mammary gland in both the group was a compound tubulo-alveolar gland surrounded by a connective tissue capsule. The alveoli were the principal secretory unit lined by simple cuboidal epithelium. In lactating animals, well developed alveoli, filled with secretions and lipid droplets were observed.

Exposure to quartz particles induces a pathological process named silicosis. Alveolar macrophages initiate the disease through their activation, which is the origin of the later dysfunctions. Ascorbic acid is known to selectively dissolve the quartz surface. During the reaction, ascorbic acid progressively disappears and hydroxyl radicals are generated from the quartz surface. These observations may be relevant to mammalian quartz toxicity, as sub-stantial amounts of ascorbic acid are present in the lung epithelium. ...
