Salmonella can carry multiple antibiotic-resistant and metalresistant genes and transmit these genes among strains worldwide. This study examined seventy-five Salmonella isolates from small-scale chicken farms (chicken feces, bedding, feed, wild animals) in Vinh Long province for the presence and relation of antibiotic and metal-resistance genes in these strains.

Propionate is used to protect bread and animal feed from moulds. The mode of action of this short-chain fatty acid was studied usingAspergillus nidulansas a model organism. The filamentous fungus is able to grow slowly on propio-nate, which is oxidized to acetyl-CoA via propionyl-CoA, methylcitrate and pyruvate. Propionate inhibits growth of A. nidulanson glucose but not on acetate; the latter was shown to inhibit propionate oxidation.

In order to overcome the limitation of land available for aquaculture in the central costal region of Vietnam and to reduce organic pollution in traditional integrated fish farming, a new method was developed called the ‘improved VAC’ In traditional VAC systems the manure from farm animals is released into fish ponds whereas in the ‘Improved VAC’ the manure is used for earthworm culture. The study provides a comprehensive picture of the animal feed sector in Vietnam (both supply and demand side) upon data collected from 2 main surveys: feed mill survey investigating the supply side and producer survey investigating the demand side. The results show that, on the supply side, SMEs appear to have less competitiveness than large ones. That is reflected in some aspects such as higher production costs per kg output, using more labor, limited quality control, limited access to capital and land, and many small enterprises have losses.
