Arterial embolization

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations are mostly caused by congenitally abnormal shunts between pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins. Our findings imply that bronchiectasis can cause pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, and thus patients who present with hypoxemia with bronchiectasis should be carefully evaluated.

Massive hemoptysis due to aspergilloma is a rare but life-threatening complication. Bronchial artery embolization is recommended as a definitive treatment for massive hemoptysis. Polyvinyl alcohol is widely used in bronchial artery embolization. A very small number of studies have reported disrupted polyvinyl alcohol, which may cause ectopic embolism.

The patient received intravenous antibiotics, antiviral medications, systemic corticosteroids and dual anticoagulation with aspirin and enoxaparin. Death outcome was reported on day 18 of illness despite aggressive supportive care. Histological analysis demonstrated that obstruction of the main pulmonary arthery and disseminated intravascular coagulation were the causes of death.

Cerebral arterial air embolism is often associated with an invasive iatrogenic etiology and a high rate of convulsive seizures. There are only a few descriptions of electroencephalogram findings in convulsive seizures due to cerebral arterial air embolism of noniatrogenic etiology.

Intrahepatic vascular shunts “IHVS” are abnormal communications between intra-hepatic vasculature involving the arterial, portal, or hepatic venous system. Arterio-portal fistula “APF” is an intrahepatic communication between the hepatic arterial system and the portal venous system without any communication with the systemic venous circulation. APF is considered a rare cause of portal hypertension and gastrointestinal bleeding in infancy.

Hemorrhage is an uncommon complication of liposuction that may be trauma-induced by the cannula on the subcutaneous perforators. It usually resolves spontaneously with external compression and results in mild to moderate ecchymosis on the liposuction site. However, in sporadic cases, active bleeding may persist and require urgent intervention for hemostasis.

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) has long been used for hemostasis of traumatic or postoperative hemorrhage and embolization of tumors. Previous retrospective studies of TAE for painful bone metastases showed 60%–80% pain reduction with a median time to response of 1–2 days.

Since renal cell carcinoma(RCC) is insensitive to conventional chemoradiotherapy, molecularly targeted drugs are commonly used treatments for unresectable advanced RCC. The aim of this study was to explore the efficacy and safety of TACE+sunitinib vs. sunitinib in the treatment of unresectable advanced RCC.

Mediastinal bronchial artery aneurysm (BAA) is a rare and lifethreatening disease. We experienced the first case confirming that, despite only slight deterioration of bronchiectasis, mediastinal BAAs expanded remarkably. A 61-year-old female was hospitalized because of hemoptysis. Her respiratory condition required intubated mechanical ventilation.

We report a rare case of a 58-year-old man with iatrogenic aorto-right atrial fistula following inadvertent saphenous vein grafting (SVG) implantation to a right coronary vein with persistent angina following CABG and resolution of symptoms following successful obliteration of large, hemodynamically significant, fistulae by coil embolization when medical management failed.

Gastric outlet obstruction can occur secondary to intrinsic or extrinsic pathology. Historically peptic ulcer disease was the most common cause of gastric outlet obstruction but now malignancy-associated disease process is more common. Gastric outlet obstruction from mucosal ischemia caused by embolization of gastroduodenal artery is unheard of. This is due to the extensive blood supply of the stomach.

Acute coronary artery occlusion is a relatively rare procedural adverse event in valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Here we present a case of a 26-mm Sapien 3 prosthetic valve implantation in a degenerated 23-mm Freedom Solo bioprosthetic surgical valve with subsequent left and right coronary occlusion.

Spinal fractures rarely cause hemothorax, and no treatment consensus has been reached. Conservative treatment is generally selected in cases without arterial injury, but there have been some reports of uncontrolled bleeding. Here we report a case of hemothorax caused by spinal fracture without arterial injury treated with transcatheter arterial embolization.

Bullet embolus is a rare condition following gunshot injuries and represents a clinical challenge regarding both diagnosis and management. Case presentation: We report the case of a 35-year-old Iranian (Middle-Eastern) male patient with a shotgun injury to both buttocks, which traveled to the heart and the popliteal area through the femoral vein and superficial femoral artery, respectively.

Primary angiosarcoma of the breast is very rare, accounting for 0.05% of all malignant breast tumors. It has very high malignant potential and poor prognosis, though due to the rarity of the disease, there is no established treatment. We report this case along with a literature review.

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma is defined as bleeding in the retroperitoneal space without any triggers such as trauma, invasive procedures, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. The mortality rate of spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma is so high that the optimal treatment timing needs to be carefully judged on the basis of detailed evaluation, and management algorithm with clear criteria.
