  • Anther culture is an effective breeding method for improving desirable traits, since it allows fast achievement of genetically homozygous lines. The present studies were carried out to evaluate the response of flue-cured tobacco anthers for high frequency pollen embryo induction in different culture media, and the effects of colchicine treatment on tobacco chromosome doubling. The results showed that different media caused significant changes in pollen embryo induction, in which the most obvious change was found in B medium with induction rates of 23.28%, 26.64%, and 28.

  • Klebsiella is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen of man and animals known for presence of diversity of Anti Microbial Resistance (AMR). The present study was undertaken to isolate and study the anti-microbial resistance in Klebsiella isolates from cattle and buffaloes. Sixty (60) samples, comprising of 33 mastitic milk and 27 diarrhoeic faecal samples were collected aseptically from cattle and buffaloes. From these 60 samples, 11 (18.33%) Klebsiella species were isolated and identified on the basis of cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics.

  • In the present study, faecal and blood samples were collected, aseptically, from an elephant arrived to the Veterinary Clinics of the College. Immediately, samples were used for bacterial isolation. A bacterial isolate, isolated from the faecal sample of an elephant was identified at the genus level to be of Escherichia species by adopting Enterobacteriaceae identification kit used for studying biochemical characteristics and carbohydrate utilization tests (Gram negative bacilli showing mainly ONPG positive, oxidase negative and nitrate reduction positive).

  • Pre-requisite for any plant biotechnological approach is development of an efficient plant regeneration system in that crop. In this regard the in vitro regeneration was achieved by using cotyledon explants from aseptically raised seedlings of popular Capsicum F1 hybrids Bharat and Indra. Seeds of both hybrids were exposed to different treatments for proper germination, were decontaminated and sown in vitro on half-strength MS medium.

  • The study was conducted to standardize an efficient protocol for callus induction, subsequent growth and in-vitro regeneration in six genotypes of proso millet viz., Gavhe, Sakhroli, Kalsuli, Vari No.10, Asond and Sukdhar. The seeds were surface sterilized with 70% ethanol for 1 minute + 1% HgCl2 for 10 minutes recorded maximum aseptic culture establishment in all genotypes. The mature embryo (seeds) of proso millet was cultured on MS medium supplemented with varying concentrations of 2,4-D (0.1-2.0 mg/l) and NAA (1.0-4.

  • Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is chronic inflammation of middle ear and mastoid cavity with recurrent ear discharge lasting for more than 6months. Studies are mainly done on the bacterial aetiology of CSOM, but very little is known about the fungal aspects of such cases. Otomycosis is increasing in the recent years because of the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, corticosteroids, and an increase in the number of immune deficiency disorders.

  • India accounts for 30% of neonatal deaths globally. Bacterial sepsis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in newborns. The study helps to make antibiotic policy in neonatal sepsis. The main objective is to study the incidence of multidrug resistant gram negative and gram positive organisms causing neonatal septicemia and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern. The study was conducted in the Department of Microbiology over a period of one year. Sample of blood was collected under aseptic precautions and processed by standard techniques.

  • Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri L.) belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae is an endangered perennial, glaburous, succulent creeping herb of great medicinal importance. Increased demand of Bacopa based drugs makes natural populations of this herb vulnerable to overexploitation. It is therefore essential to optimize and scale up in vitro multiplication protocols for conservation and multiplication of wild and cultivated germplasm. Nodal segments with axillary buds of an elite Bacopa genotype, were surface sterilized and inoculated to initiate aseptic cultures on 0.

  • Conventional propagation of Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum [Lind.]) plant through seeds and suckers is a tedious and very slow process and not practical when carried out commercially on large scale. Hence, biotechnological approach such as micropropagation is considered as a novel method for production of pathogen-free true-to-type plantlets at a faster rate.

  • Anthurium is an important ornamental plant grown around the globe and also in India. Seed and vegetative propagation of this plant are tedious and very slow process and not practical when carried out on a large scale. Therefore, biotechnological approach such as in- vitro cloning is found to be a novel method for production of pathogen free true-to-type plantlets at a faster rate. In this study, a competent surface sterilization procedure was standardized for aseptic in-vitro culture from leaf explants of Anthurium adraeanum (Hort.) cv. Fire under in vitro conditions.

  • Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates. Neonatal sepsis may be categorized as early-onset or late-onset. Clinical manifestations of neonatal sepsis are non-specific, therefore, clinical diagnosis of sepsis is difficult and laboratory help is required. Present study was done to evaluate three different methods in diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. 3 ml of venous blood was collected employing strict aseptic precautions from all babies admitted to the NICU in our hospital during the study period. 2 ml of blood was aseptically added to BacT/ ALERT PF culture bottle.
