We demonstrate in this study that near-zero, ultra-flattened chromatic dispersion can be achieved over a wide range of wavelengths in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) by means of slight variations in the geometrical parameters of the cladding.

In this paper, we present circular lattice solid-core PCFs that have a difference in the stomatal diameters of the first ring near the core compared with other rings in the cladding. In addition, the heterogeneity in the distance between two air holes in the structure is also emphasized.

This paper reports effects of ultraviolet (UV) light radiation on the physicochemical, electrical and mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) cable insulating materials. Changes in structural and morphological properties of UV-aged samples were characterized by various analytical methods such as attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATRFTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

In this study, cellulose acetate (CA)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and CA/PVP/Mn2+ nanofibers were produced by the electrospinning method, and these cellulose-derived membranes were used as carriers for arginase immobilization for the first time. The structural and morphological analysis of these cellulose-derived nanofibers were determined by attenuated total reflection-Fourier to transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Graminan-type fructans (GTFs) have demonstrated immune benefits. However, mechanisms underlying these benefits are unknown. We studied GTFs interaction with Toll-like receptors (TLRs), performed molecular docking and determined their impact on dendritic cells (DCs).

This study presents a Finite Element (FE) model updating methodology of a piping system and demonstrates vibration attenuation at its resonant frequencies using tuned local resonators distributed along its length. An experimental laboratory scaled version of a prototype piping system inspired from existing piping structures in the oil and gas industry is assembled to study its dynamic behavior under laboratory conditions.

The average QES value is consistent with the previous results obtained in some back-arc regions such as Japan Sea and may suggest a similar termination age of spreading process. However, since the distribution of 90 ray paths can be roughly classified into two directions, northeast-southwest (NE-SW) and northwest-southeast (NW-SE), the average Q values of these two directions are derived to be QNE-SW = 455±109 and QNW-SE = 133±50, respectively.

Melanocortin receptor (MCR) agonists have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties mediated by receptors expressed on cells relevant to arthritis. Repository corticotropin injection (RCI; Acthar® Gel), an MCR agonist preparation, is approved as adjunctive therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but its mechanism of action in RA is unclear.

In nonlinear optics, the soliton transmission in different forms can be described with the use of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. Here, the soliton transmission is investigated by solving the NLS equation with the reciprocal of the group velocity b1ðzÞ, the group velocity dispersion coefficient b2ðzÞ and nonlinear coefficient cðzÞ. Two-soliton solutions for the NLS equation are obtained through the Hirota method. According to the solutions obtained, b1ðzÞ and cðzÞ with different function forms are taken to study the characteristics of solitons.

Miscibility of NRL and chitosan in solution was investigated by using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and found that chitosan incorporated with NRL less than 40 weight percentage (wt%) was partially miscible. Films of the chitosan blending with higher NRL contents exhibited two peaks of glass transition temperatures. Interfacial polarization and dielectric properties of polymer films were improved with increasing NRL contents. Chemical structure of the blends were characterized by using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR).

The effect of insulin on cancer metastatic potential was studied in a human hepatocarcinoma cell line, H7721. Cell adhesion to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and lamininaswell as chemotactic cellmigration and invasion were selected as the indices of metastasis-related phenotypes for assessment of metastatic potential ex vivo. The results indicated that insulin enhanced all of these metastasis-related phenotypes.

To elucidate the chemical interactions underlying the role of metallothioneins (MTs) in reducing the cytotoxicity caused by MeHg(II), we monitored in parallel by electronic absorption and CDspectroscopies the stepwise addition of MeHgCl stock solution to mammalian Zn7-MT1 and the isolated Zn4 -aMT1 and Zn3 -bMT1 fragments. The incor-poration of MeHg + into Zn7-MT and Zn3-bMT entails total displacement of Zn(II) and unfolding of the protein. However, both features are only partial for Zn4 -aMT.

Caspase-3 is a programmed cell death protease involved in neuronal apop-tosis during physiological development and under pathological conditions. It is a promising therapeutic target for treatment of neurodegenerative dis-eases. We reported previously that isoquinoline-1,3,4-trione and its deriva-tives inhibit caspase-3.

The existence of an inducible mitochondrial nitric oxide synthase has been recently related to the nitrosative⁄oxidative damage and mitochondrial dys-function that occurs during endotoxemia. Melatonin inhibits both inducible nitric oxide synthase and inducible mitochondrial nitric oxide synthase activities, a finding related to the antiseptic properties of the indoleamine.

The most well-known contribution to the analysis of contagion through direct linkages in nancial systems is that of Allen and Gale (2000). 2 Using a network structure involving four banks, they demonstrate that the spread of contagion depends crucially on the pattern of interconnectedness between banks. When the network is complete, with all banks having exposures to each other such that the amount of interbank deposits held by any bank is evenly spread over all other banks, the impact of a shock is readily attenuated. Every bank takes a small `hit' and there is no contagion.

In this study, structural features of Tricholoma matsutake polysaccharide (TMP-A) were investigated by a combination of infrared (IR) spectra, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The results indicated that TMP-A had a backbone of 1,4-- d-glucopyranose residue which branches at O-6 based on the experimental results. The branches were mainly composed of an (1→3)--d-galactopyranose residue, and terminated with -d-xylopyranose residue.

Measuring the CT attenuation of intraperitoneal fluid (figures 1, 2.) has proved exceedingly useful in its characterization, because intraperitoneal fluid collections in trauma patients may not always represent blood. Although there is variation with individual scanners, hemoperitoneum usually measures greater than 30 HU. By comparison, water-dense fluids in a trauma patient, such as ascites, urine, bile, or intestinal contents, measure 0 to 5 or 10 HU.
