On the edge of a grand plain, almost in the centre of France, rises a rich and beautiful city, time-honored and famous, for it stood there before France had begun and while Rome still spread its wide wings over this whole region, and it has been the scene of some of the most notable events in French history. The record which follows, is by the hand of me, NICOMACHUS, once the happy servant of the great Queen of Palmyra, than whom the world never saw a queen more illustrious, or a woman adorned with brighter virtues. But my design is not to write her eulogy, or to recite the wonderful story of her life. That task requires a stronger and a more impartial hand than mine. Lucius Domitius Aurelianus[1] (9 tháng 9 năm 214 hay 215 – tháng 9 hay tháng 10 năm 275), còn được gọi là Aurelian, là Hoàng đế của Đế quốc La Mã, trị vì từ năm 270 đến năm 275.
