Avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) can lead to a loss in millions of dollars in poultry annually because of mortality and produce contamination. Studies have verified that many immune-related genes undergo changes in alternative splicing (AS), along with nonsense mediated decay (NMD), to regulate the immune system under different conditions.

In this article, we present and describe the Avian Immunome DB (Avimm) for easy gene property extraction as exemplifed by avian immune genes. The avian immune system is characterised by a cascade of complex biological processes underlaid by more than 1000 different genes.

Avian infectious bronchitis (IB) is one of the major economically important, worldwide distributed and highly contagious and acute upper‐ respiratory tract disease of poultry caused by avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) belonging to family Coronaviridae and affects both galliform and nongalliform birds. IBV demonstrates a wide range of tissues tropism, including the renal and reproductive systems.

Selecting generation after generation of birds for their faster growth rates and higher meat yields has left the birds’ immune systems less able to cope with infections and there is a high degree of genetic uniformity in the population, making spread of the virus all the more easy. Further intensification of the industry has been suggested by some as the solution to avian flu, on the rationale that keeping birds indoors will prevent contamination. However, this relies on perfect, fail-safe biosecurity – and such measures are near impossible to implement.

Th i s book wi 11 be of great interest to anyone concerned with animal feeds and feeding programs whether one is studying bovine, porcine, equine, avian or lower vertebrate (fish and eel) nutrition. This information is critical to the success of an animal feeding program. Somet imes the di fference between a successful and a failing program can be traced to mineral deficiencies which cause either abnormal growth, reduced milk production, interrupted fertility and breeding, compromised immune system integrity and/or decrement in normal hemoglobin concentration.
