  • Diabetic foot ulcer is one of the dreaded complications of uncontrolled diabetic mellitus, leading to consequences like gangrene and amputation of foot. This study was conducted as an endeavor to scrutinise the major genera of bacteria which were in association with the infected diabetic foot ulcers and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern. This prospective analytical study included 100 samples from diabetic foot ulcer patients. Isolation and identification of organism were done based on standard laboratory technique.

  • This study was designed to isolate and determine the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of bacteria associated with the hands of commuters in Akure metropolis. The samples were collected using sterile swab sticks at different motor parks (Obaile, Oke-Ijebu, Benin, FUTA and Road block), then transported to Microbiology laboratory for further analyses. Isolation of microorganisms was carried by direct plating on the bacteriological media. The plates were incubated at 37oC for 24 hours. Enumeration of the bacterial isolates was done by direct count of the colonies formed on the plates.

  • Septicemia in neonates refers to generalized bacterial infection documented by positive blood culture in the first four weeks of life. Neonatal septicaemia remains one of the most important causes of mortality despite considerable progress in hygiene, introduction of new antimicrobial agents and advanced measures for early diagnosis and treatment. In this cross-sectional study, blood samples from the suspected infants were collected and processed in the bacteriology laboratory.

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen and is the leading cause of nosocomial infections especially among patients admitted to ICU and burn units. It has natural resistance as well as acquired multi drug resistance to various antibiotics leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Aim of the study is to isolate P. aeruginosa from burn and ICU patients and to evaluate multidrug resistance. Samples were collected from 100 patients from both ICUs and burn unit for a period of 15 months. Samples were processed in the Microbiology laboratory by standard bacteriological methods.

  • us is one of the major samples received in the Microbiology laboratory for culture and sensitivity. Though the bacterial profile from pus samples remain similar in various studies, the inadvertent use of antibiotics has lead to the emergence of various drug resistant pathogens, which in turn acts as a great challenge to the health services.

  • Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections especially in developing countries. It shows lot of regional variation in causative pathogens and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. Hence requires regular regionwise surveillance. Urine samples received at microbiology laboratory from patients with symptomatology of urinary tract infection were included in the study. All the samples were processed according to standard protocol, identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing was done.

  • In the context of the present clinical scenario urinary tract infections are to be dealt with most frequently. The non judicious haphazard use of antibiotics is to be blamed for coming into existence of resistant microorganisms. A myriad of microorganisms cause urinary tract infections. Moreover the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the isolated uropathogens is changing continuously.

  • Diabetic foot is one of the most feared complications of diabetes and is the leading cause of hospitalization in diabetic patients. Diabetic patients have a lifetime risk as high as 25% for developing into foot ulceration. The reasons for the increased incidence of diabetic ulcer involve the interaction of several pathogenic factors like neuropathy, abnormal foot biomechanics and peripheral arterial disease. The study was performed to determine the microbial etiology (aerobic and anaerobic) of diabetic foot ulcer and their susceptibility pattern in a tertiary care hospital.
