  • In this paper, authors use a fi nite element model based on higher-order displacement plate theory for analysis of stiffened laminated composite plates. Transverse shear deformation is included in the formulation making the model applicable for both moderately t hick and t hin composite plates.

  • The following report was prepared immediately after the writer's return from the conference. It was written from the viewpoint of an engineer listening to experts in a field far separated from his own. Such judgments as may be found interspersed amongst the reports of individual papers are of an engineering nature, and are not to be construed, as being based upon other than an amateur’s knowledge of linguistic theory.

  • This paper presents an experimental preference tool des!gned, implemented and tested m the Eurotra pro)ect. The mechanism is based on preference rules which can either compare subtrees pairwise or single out a subtree on the basis of some specified constraints. Scoring permits combining the effects of various preference rules.

  • The paper presents a numerical method to simulate two-phase turbulent cavitating flows in ducts of varying cross-section usually faced in engineering. The method is based on solution of two-phase Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations of two-phase mixture. The numerical method uses artificial compressibility algorithm extended to unsteady flows with dual-time technique.

  • This paper presents a high precision bonding approach, capable of submicron alignment accuracy, based on the thermosonic flip-chip bonding technique and misalignment self-correction elements. The precision of the bonding technique is guaranteed by using of misalignment self-correction bump (convex) and hollow (concave) elements.

  • In this paper, an optimized homogenization method using uniaxial tensile tests to estimate material parameters in the micromechanical model of a heat treated DC04 steel is introduced. The method is based on a representative element model for the macroscopically homogeneous material.

  • In this paper, the buckling and post-buckling behaviors of eccentrically stiffened functionally graded material (ES-FGM) plates on elastic foundations subjected to in-plane compressive loads or thermal loads are investigated by an analytical solution. The novelty of this work is that FGM plates are reinforced by FGM stiffeners and the temperature, stiffener, foundation are considered. The first-order shear deformation plate theory is used.

  • In this paper, the free vibration of functionally sandwich grades plates with stiffeners is investigated by using the finite element method. The material properties are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction by a power-law distribution. Based on the third-order shear deformation theory, the governing equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton’s principle.

  • Mechanical shim is an advanced technology for reactor power and axial offset control with control rod assemblies. To address the adverse accuracy impact on the ex-core power range neutron flux measurements-based axial offset control resulting from the variable positions of control rod assemblies, the lead-lag-compensated in-core self-powered vanadium detector signals are utilized.

  • In this study, instrumented indentation testing was conducted at room temperature for the investigation of the effect of strain rate on the hardness and yield strength in the weld zone of a commonly used structural steel, SM520. A number of indentation tests were undertaken at a number of strain rate values from 0.02 s −1 to 0.2 s −1 in the weld metal (WM), heat-affected zone (HAZ), and base metal (BM) regions of the weld zone.

  • The blends based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC), nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), natural rubber (NR) and polyethylene (PE) were made by three different methods. The mechanical properties of these blends in dependence of mixing time and temperature were characterized. The result showed that the two-step blending method, where PVC and NBR were first mixed together and then blended with NR and PE, is the best one to prepare blends with high mechanical properties.

  • This study evaluates the displacement sensitivity of a new compliant microgripper. The microgripper is designed based on a four-bar mechanism and the concept of a compliant mechanism. The effects of the width of the right circular hinge, the thickness of microgripper, and the material properties on the dis-placement sensitivity are considered via using the finite element method. In the beginning, the stress and deformation of the compliant microgripper are evaluated.

  • In the manufacturing field of sheet products, such as paper, cigarette package, packing box, printed circuit board (PCB), solar silicon chip and so on, the detection of laminated sheet is an essential part. The precision of the counting directly affects the economic benefit of the factory and the subsequent production operation. In order to reduce the high cost and noise in mechanical paper counters, paper counting algorithms based on the gray value difference of paper have been applied and tested to solve these problems based only on vision signals.

  • The third book of four-volume edition of “Solar Cells” is devoted to solar cells based on silicon wafers, i.e., the main material used in today's photovoltaics. Single-crystalline Si (c-Si) modules are among the most efficient but at the same time the most expensive since they require the highest purity silicon and involve a lot of stages of complicated processes in their manufacture. Polycrystalline silicon (mc-Si) cells are less expensive to produce solar cells but are less efficient.

  • One of the most fundamental question that an Engineer has to ask him/herself is what is how does it deform, and when does it break. Ultimately, it its the answer to those two questions which would provide us with not only a proper safety assesment of a structure, but also how to properly design it. Ironically, botht he ACI and the AISC codes are based on limit state design, yet practically all design analyses are linear and elastic.

  • For writers of technical books, there can be no better piece of advice. Around the time of writing the first edition – about a decade ago – there were very few monographs on this subject: today, there are possibly no less than 20. Based on critical inputs, this edition stands thoroughly revamped. New chapters on ventilator waveforms, airway humidification, and aerosol therapy in the ICU now find a place. Novel software-based modes of ventilation have been included. Ventilator-associated pneumonia has been separated into a new chapter.
