This study sought to investigate the prognostic value of basement membrane (BM)-associated gene expressions in oral cancer. Methods We harvested and integrated data on BM-associated genes (BMGs), the oral cancer transcriptome, and clinical information from public repositories. After identifying differentially expressed BMGs, we used Cox and Lasso regression analyses to create a BMG-based risk score for overall survival at various intervals.

Basement membrane (BM) is an important component of the extracellular matrix, which plays an important role in the growth and metastasis of tumor cells. However, few biomarkers based on BM have been developed for prognostic assessment and prediction of immunotherapy in bladder cancer (BLCA).

Bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) is the most common genitourinary cancer and the prognosis of patients is often poor. However, studies of basement membrane-related genes (BM-related genes) in BLCA are less reported. Therefore, we established a BM-related genes signature to explore their functional and prognostic value in BLCA.

Anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease and antineutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis are the main causes of pulmonary-renal syndrome (PRS). The concurrence of both ANCA - myeloperoxidase (MPO) and proteinase 3 (PR3) - and anti-GBM antibodies has been described, although positivity for all three antibodies has rarely been reported. The natural history of triplepositive patients as well as the best therapeutic approach remains unknown.

Alport syndrome is a rare inherited disorder affecting the glomerular basement membrane, manifested by hematuria and proteinuria that is commonly associated with ocular and hearing defects. There is limited information about the maternal and fetal outcomes of Alport syndrome in pregnancy.

Hyalinizing trabecular tumor is a rare follicular cell-derived thyroid neoplasm that is considered to be a borderline tumor with malignant potential rather than a benign tumor. The detection of RET/PTC rearrangements and nuclear cytologic features suggests a relationship between hyalinizing trabecular tumor and papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Equine endometrosis is a chronic degenerative condition, described as endometrial fibrosis that forms in the stroma, under the basement membrane and around the endometrial glands. The role of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) in the development of tissue fibrosis varies depending on the organ, and its profibrotic role in mare endometrosis remains unclear.

The incidence of dementia and cognitive decline is increasing with no therapy or cure. One of the reasons treatment remains elusive is because there are various pathologies that contribute to age-related cognitive decline.

In society, there is a clear need to improve the success rate of techniques to restore fertility. Therefore a deeper knowledge of the dynamics of the complex molecular environment that regulates human gametogenesis and (early) folliculogenesis in vivo is necessary.

Pancreatic cancer shows a highly aggressive and infiltrative growth pattern and is characterized by an abundant tumor stroma known to interact with the cancer cells, and to influence tumor growth and drug resistance. Cancer cells actively take part in the production of extracellular matrix proteins, which then become deposited into the tumor stroma.

Hepsin, (also called TMPRSS1) and TMPRSS3 are type II transmembrane serine proteases (TTSPs) that are involved in cancer progression. TTSPs can remodel extracellular matrix (ECM) and, when dysregulated, promote tumor progression and metastasis by inducing defects in basement membrane and ECM molecules.

Penetration of the mammary gland basement membrane by cancer cells is a crucial first step in tumor invasion. Using a mouse model of ductal carcinoma in situ, we previously found that inhibition of peptidylarginine deiminase 2 (PAD2, aka PADI2) activity appears to maintain basement membrane integrity in xenograft tumors.

Tumor invasion through a basement membrane is one of the earliest steps in metastasis, and growth factors, such as Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) and Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF), stimulate this process in a majority of solid tumors.

Spermatogonial Stem Cells (SSCs) are unipotent adult stem cells, defined as the undifferentiated stem cells located along the basement membrane of the seminiferous tubules. This present study is aimed to carry out the culture and characterization of SSCs in pre-pubertal age group of mice. Isolation of SSCs was done by two-step enzymatic digestion method and was seeded in a six-well plate. In primary culture (P0), colony forming unit was observed on day four post incubation. Mice Spermatogonial Stem Cells (mSSCs) adherence was observed on day eight post incubation.

The present study was conducted on 24 Uttara fowl. The histological, histomorphometrical and histochemical features with their age related changes in large intestine were studied. The surface epithelium in both caeca and colorectum was lined by simple columnar epithelium with interspersed goblet cells. Finger like villous projections were seen in the tunica mucosa. PAS- Alcian blue reaction was showed by all the segments of caecum as well as colorectum.

The leading cause of death in cancer patients is metastasis. Invasion is an integral part of metastasis and is carried out by proteolytic structures called invadopodia at the cellular level. In this introductory review, we start by evaluating the definition of invadopodia.

The main component of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) in Alzheimer’s disease is the amyloid-b protein (Ab), a 4-kDa polypeptide derived from the b-amyloid protein precursor (APP). The accumulation of Ab in the basement membrane has been implicated in the degeneration of adjacent vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). However, the mechanism of Ab toxicity is still unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of substrate-bound Ab on VSMC in culture. The use of substrate-bound proteins in cell culture mimics presentation of the proteins to cells as if bound to the basement membrane.

Basement membranes are sheets of extracellular matrix that separate epi-thelia from connective tissues and outline muscle fibers and the endothelial lining of blood vessels. A major function of basement membranes is to establish and maintain stable tissue borders, exemplified by frequent vascu-lar breaks and a disrupted pial and retinal surface in mice with mutations or deletions of basement membrane proteins.

Papillomaviruses are epitheliotropic non-enveloped double-stranded DNA viruses, whose replication is strictly dependent on the terminally differenti-ating tissue of the epidermis. They induce self-limiting benign tumors of skin and mucosa, which may progress to malignancy (e.g. cervical carci-noma). Prior to entry into basal cells, virions attach to heparan sulfate moieties of the basement membrane.
