Several studies have addressed the cross-language transfer of comprehension skills and strategies. Royer and Carlo (1991) examined the transfer of listening and reading comprehension skills from Spanish to English by 49 sixth-grade students enrolled in a transitional bilingual education program. Results indicated that students’ English reading performance at the end of sixth grade was most highly correlated with their reading in Spanish a year earlier. That is, good fifth-grade readers in Spanish became good sixth-grade readers in English.

In May of 2000, I graduated with an undergraduate degree in elementary education and a minor in English as a Second Language. My first teaching position was in a rural school district. I taught fourth through eighth grade bilingual classes, two sections of seventh and eighth grade Spanish, and worked with several at-risk students. Frustrated by the educational gains these students made, and the lack of respect for bilingual education, I applied and was hired for my current fourth grade position in a neighboring school district.

“Paraprofessionals often possess unique skills that help them know the students in a way that helps students learn. These unique skills are often the result of paraprofessionals’ spending more time with the students, knowing them from the community, and sometimes sharing the same culture and language. Positive school environments were characterised by paraprofessionals working as a team with teachers, being viewed as educators, being treated respectfully by all school personnel and parents, and feeling rewarded by their work with children.

In a remarkable article—especially since it was pub-lished in Madison’s left-leaning alternative weekly Isthmus—two Verona Area High School students this past fall managed to point out the flaws in Wisconsin’s tradition- al bilingual programs for non-English speak-ing students.
