A major draw-back to large scale production of bioactive glasses is the high cost of the standard silica precursor, usually tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The current study describes a novel solegel preparation of 45S5 bioactive glass using diatom biosilica from cultured cells of the diatom, Aulacoseira granulata as substitute to TEOS.

Fibrin glue, a two-component tissue adhesive, has a range of clinical indications. Bioactive glass (BG) S53P4 has been approved for clinical use in several craniomaxillofacial and orthopedic applications. Although sometimes used simultaneously, there is no data available regarding the possible interaction of these two biocompatible substances.

This paper presents novel outcomes about the effect of degree of inulin polymerization (DP) on the technological properties of annatto seed oil powder obtained by freeze-drying. Inulins with two DP’s were evaluated: GR-inulin (DP ≥ 10) and HP-inulin (DP ≥ 23).

Monoaldehydes, due to natural origin and therapeutic activity, have attracted great attention for their ability to crosslink chitosan hydrogels for biomedical applications. However, most studies have focused on singlecomponent hydrogels. In this work, chitosan-based hydrogels, crosslinked for the first time with 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde (THBA), were modified with pectin (PC), bioactive glass (BG), and rosmarinic acid (RA).

Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the ‘‘in vitro’’ evaluation of the bioactivity. The obtained results confirmed that the ceramic powder can be used as biomaterial for bone tissue engineering due to its high bioactivity expressed by the rapid formation of a biological carbonated hydroxyapatite layer on its surface after ‘‘in vitro’’ assay.

The presence of Ag element was controled by EDX analysis. ‘‘In vitro’’ of synthesized glass was effectuated by soaking of glass powder in SBF solution. EDX result indicated that silver was released when immersing derivative bioglass in SBF solution and silver is an antibacterial agent. XRD and SEM confirmed the bioactivity of glass 45S-Ag by the apatite formation on its surface.

Scientists who dedicate their research activity to biomaterials pass through the typical dichotomy that often characterizes the basic research. On one side is the wish of exploring new frontiers of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, pharmaceutics and all other disciplines to which biomaterials can be applied. Constantly improving of scientific knowledge would feed the freedom of attempting new strategies for producing materials with always tailored and improved characteristics.
