  • In a recent paper, we described our efforts in search for evidence supporting epigenetic transgenerational inheritance caused by endocrine disrupter chemicals. One aspect of our study was to compare genome-wide DNA methylation changes in the vinclozolin-exposed fetal male germ cells (n = 3) to control samples (n = 3), their counterparts in the next, unexposed, generation (n = 3 + 3) and also in adult spermatozoa (n = 2 + 2) in both generations.

  • Soil type is a vital determinant of soil fertility because of its characteristic biological, chemical, and physical properties. However, the soil fertility of upland soil is probably changed by different agricultural management practices regardless of soil type. This study investigated the features of soil fertility (bacterial biomass, total carbon (TC), and total nitrogen (TN)) in upland fields in Japan. One thousand soil samples from different soil types were collected from upland fields located on 36 prefectures in Japan.

  • Bioassessment of surface waters is one of the most important approaches to predict the deterioration of ecosystems and achieve environmental sustainability according to the application of the European Water Framework Directive. The present review emphasizes the importance of the bioassessment of freshwater quality especially running waters based on diatom metrics. Nutrient enrichment and hydromorphological alternation driven by human activities are the main factors for the ecological compromise of freshwater ecosystems.

  • Firefly luciferin is widely applied as a biotechnological tool for visualizing various biological processes in vitro and in vivo. Chemically, 2-cyano-6-hydroxybenzothiazole, as a key synthetic intermediate of firefly luciferin, is obtained from 2-cyano-6-methoxybenzothiazole by changing the methoxy with a hydroxy group. However, this approach is costly and not suited for large-scale synthesis. Here we report cost-effective and efficient syntheses of 2-cyano-6- hydroxybenzothiazole through the catalytic Sandmeyer-type cyanation reaction.

  • Cadmium (Cd)-containing chemicals can cause serious damage to biological systems. In animals and plants, Cd exposure can lead to metabolic disorders or death. However, for the most part the effects of Cd on specific biological processes are not known. DNA methylation is an important mechanism for the regulation of gene expression.

  • Numerical results show that there exist quantum condensations of any component at appropriate regions of coupling constants corresponding to its positive effective chemistry potential, i.e. to its dynamic stability. In addition, the phase quantum transitions of both first and second order appear when the coupling constant changes.

  • In Vietnam, and particularly in Gia Lam, Hanoi, average yields are low, prices are high, and local demand is not met. Reasons for low yields in Vietnam include climate change, drought, flooding and infestation by new species of insects. This study was done to identify the species of insects which are found in the corn fields of Gia Lam, Hanoi.

  • Accelerated exploitation of oil and gas resources planned and implemented by ONGC and BGEIPL in west coast offshore region would result into stress particularly on marine environment. The long term physical, chemical and biological changes due to routine discharges from offshore installations can best be assessed through a study on accumulation of hydrocarbons and heavy metals in fishes, plankton and sediments which together form biotic and abiotic components of marine environment.

  • Conservation agriculture (CA) has potential to changes soil physical, chemical and biological soil quality parameters compared to conventional tillage (CT) systems. The improved bio-physico-chemical soil quality in turn, affect the ecosystem services and sustainability of crop production system through counterbalancing the climate variability with the help of increasing sink for carbon sequestration within the soil. CA can also affect the functional diversity of soil microbes that essential for improved soil quality, crop production and many ecosystem services.

  • Fly ash has tremendous potential as a nutrient supplement and plays a favourable role in increasing growth performance. Fly ash constitutes above 70% of the whole amount of residues formed in power plants through combustion of coal. The addition of Fly ash in soil improves or changes various physical, chemical and biological characteristics of soil. Fly ash is used for the improvement of the soil texture, water holding capability, density, bulk density, porosity etc. by using in different ratio with soil. For the growth of plant and crop yield fly ash is used as ameliorate in acidic soils.

  • The nature of fresh produce is that of a live respiring body, whose freshness is maintained only when its cells are live and active. Packaging technologies are adopted to keep produce fresh should be based on the principle that there is any changes in chemical, physical or biological quality should be suppressed, while the nominal level of metabolic activity in active plant cells should be preserved. The scientific principles of release system are presented in this review.

This review is added with recent research work, pertaining to practical applications besides the academic importance. The review includes the diseases caused by Phomopsis vexans, yield losses and methods of control. Although control methods like mechanical, chemical, biological and integrated are discussed here, it would be apt to recommend and practice the biological methods of control in the changing climate scenario, drudgery in mechanical methods and to maintain the safe environment.

  • With the change in the global scenario drought is becoming one of the major problem among other stress and its effect is more severe in rice whose life cycle completely depends on water. Whether it occurs during any stage (early, intermittent and late) it affects crop and its effect is more severe when this stress coincides with reproductive stage of the crop growth. However, rice respond to it by sending signals to shoot which generates signals in terms of physical, chemical and biological form. Hence, screening of plants at this stage is most effective for development of drought resistance.

  • Today, when we talk of agriculture, it is imperative to go to pesticides. There has been a constant change in the selection and use of pesticides by the time. For example, 4500 years ago Sumerian found evidence of the use of sulfur as a pesticide for agriculture. Mainly these were natural compounds, but after the Second World War a wave was used in the use of chemical pesticides, which has arsenic, hydrogen cyanide and D.D.T. like chemicals promoted.
