Bodily experiences

The question sustained throughout the project, and developed into four key principal research aims or foci, framing my research approach and helping to define the field covered. These concerned: abstracting musical basslines into an environmental domain; articulating building materials through vibration; composing for a tactile sensation bodily experience; understanding the dialogue between hearing and sensation, and how felt and audible aspects affect awareness and perception of each other.

Obesity is a multi-dimensional condition with causal factors beyond the physiological into the behavioural, dietetic and psychological. Understanding the lived experience of those who are overweight and obese and self-perceived barriers to access and engagement in intervention are imperative to formulating a systemic response to the complex problem of obesity.

Furthermore, the explanatory scope of TSC sometimes is misunder- stood as stopping short at the boundaries of the physical body, leaving embeddedness out of the account. However, the main unit of the analysis of cognition arguably is the on-going interaction between the embodied agent and the context of action. An adequate description of bodily-based experience should begin in the agent’s relationship to the surroundings, because experience arises from the interaction between agent and context.

The fact that there is a reciprocal relation between mental states and bodily conditions, acting both for good and ill, is nothing new in human experience. Even among the most crude and unobserving, traditions and incidents have given witness to this knowledge. For centuries stories of the hair turning white during the night on account of fright or sorrow, the cause and cure of diseases through emotional disturbances, and death, usually directly by apoplexy, caused by anger, grief, or joy, have been current and generally accepted.
