Ebook "Introduction to physical oceanography" begins with the basic equations of motion in integral form and covers such essential topics as geostropic flow, barotropic and baroclinic ocean circulations, vorticity, and the astronomical tides. Among the many appendices is one on the method of Matched Asymptotic Expansions as applied to the Gulf Stream the most modern and systematic way of looking at boundary layer problems. Problems are included at the end of each chapter.

In this paper, free vibration of bidirectional functionally graded sandwich (BFGSW) beams is studied by using a finite element formulation. The beams made from three distinct materials are composed of three layers, a homogeneous core and two bidirectional FGM face layers with material properties varying in both the thickness and longitudinal directions by power gradation laws. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory, a finite element formulation is derived and employed to compute the vibration characteristics of the beams with various boundary conditions.

Ground improvement technique by prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) in combination with vacuum preloading is widely used to facilitate consolidation process and reduce residual settlement. However, this technique seem hardly be estimated by both analytical method and numerical method because it has complex boundary conditions (such as vacuum pressure changing with time). Moreover, lateral displacements caused by this technique are also significant problem.

The effects of several physical parameters on the water sheet oscillation are studied by determining the variation of the temporal growth rate with the wavenumber. It is found that a larger relative steam velocity to water velocity has a tendency to destabilize the water sheet with increased dynamic pressure. On the other hand, a larger ratio of steam boundary layer to the half water sheet thickness has a stabilizing effect on the water sheet oscillation.

Approximate numerical evaluations of the Rayleigh number are obtained for a stability problemof thermal convection in a heat-conducting micropolar fluid layer between two rigid boundaries. The influences of all the physical parameters on the values of the Rayleigh number are studied.

The method of skin frictional resistant reduction is injecting air flows to creating small bubbles into the turbulent boundary layer developing on the ship skin. Research found that this method may reduce ship energy consumption. This method could be applied to large ships with not high speed movement. A model ship that is scaled 1/33 of a 20000 ton cargo ship had been created for carrying out experiment in calm water and in regular wave conditions.

The World Wide Web, for much of its existence, has been a method for distributing passive information to a widely distributed number of people. The Web has, indeed, been exceptionally good for that purpose. With the addition of forms and image maps, Web pages began to become interactive—but the interaction was often simply a new way to get at the same information. The limitations of Web distribution were all too apparent once designers began to try to stretch the boundaries of what the Web can do.

Let X be a compact K¨hler manifold with strictly pseudoconvex bounda ary, Y. In this setting, the SpinC Dirac operator is canonically identified with ¯ ¯ ∂ + ∂ ∗ : C ∞ (X; Λ0,e ) → C ∞ (X; Λ0,o ). We consider modifications of the classi¯ cal ∂-Neumann conditions that define Fredholm problems for the SpinC Dirac operator. In Part 2, [7], we use boundary layer methods to obtain subelliptic estimates for these boundary value problems. Using these results, we obtain an expression for the finite part of the holomorphic Euler characteristic of a strictly pseudoconvex manifold...

In the recharge area, oxidising conditions occur and dissolution of calcium and bicarbonate dominates. As the water continues to move down dip, further modifications are at first limited. By observing the redox potential (Eh) of abstracted groundwater, a sharp redox barrier was detected beyond the edge of the confining layer, corresponding to the complete exhaustion of dissolved oxygen. Bicarbonate increases and the pH rises until buffering occurs at about 8.3.
