A new rectal cooling device for therapeutic hypothermia (TH) therapy is designed and is applied in TH treatment of SD rats with ischemic-hypoxic brain damage. Our new cooling device realized rapid TH induction in SD rats with ischemic-hypoxic brain damage, inhibited the apoptosis of cells in the hippocampal CAl region, and did not cause histological damage to the rectal tissues.

Isoflurane-induced neuroapoptosis and cognitive impairment has been previously reported. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been shown to be a neuromodulator that is thought to have anti-apoptotic, antiinflammatory, and anti-oxidative benefits. However, it is not known if H2S is protective against anesthesia-induced apoptosis and cognitive defects.

Identification of early signs of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has proven of prognostic significance. Yet, the importance of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), being present concomitantly had not been investigated yet, despite the known influence of hypothermia on hemostasis.

Fromin vivo models of stroke it is known that ischemia⁄reperfusion indu-ces oxidative stress that is accompanied by deterioration of brain mito-chondria. Previously, we reported that the increase in Ca 2+ induces functional breakdown and morphological disintegration in brain mitochon-dria subjected to hypoxia⁄reoxygenation (H⁄R). Protection by ADP indica-ted the involvement of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore in the mechanism of membrane permeabilization.

Both hypoxia and hyperoxia, deregulating the oxidative balance, may play a role in the pathology of neurodegenerative disorders underlain by cerebral ischemia. In the present study, quantitative proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to evaluate regional metabolic alterations, following a 24-hour hypoxic or hyperoxic exposure on the background of ischemic brain insult, in two
