Broodstock age

The present study is undertaken to observe different stages of embryonic development of an Indian major carp, Labeo rohita of two different age groups (+2 and +3), kept under culture and hatchery conditions. The studies of embryonic and larval development provide the essential information regarding the early life history of the target species kept under experimentation. The main aim of this study is to provide information about the comparison of embryonic development of the same species with two different brooder age groups.

In the present study, the Gonadosomatic index and Hepatosomatic index of common carp (Cyprinus carpio var. communis) broodstock was evaluated. Both sexes of two different age groups (virgin and 1+ year) were selected for the study. It was observed that all the physico-chemical conditions were optimum. The GSI and HSI values were maximum during March which is supposed to be the spawning season of common carp in India.
