The aetiology of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) in animals is still unknown. In humans, this pulmonary disorder is a rare autosomal recessive disorder triggered by a mutation in the gene SLC34A2, which causes deposition and aggregation of calcium and phosphate in the pulmonary parenchyma with formation of microliths.

Involvement in cervical ligamentum favum is a rare manifestation of the calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease. Only few cases of this condition have been reported. We revealed eighteen cases of CPPD in cervical ligamentum favum that diagnosed at a single medical center. In our case series, clinical characteristics and magnetic resonance imaging findings of patients are described.

Conventional CTCS images the mid/lower chest for coronary artery disease (CAD). Because many CAD patients are also at risk for lung malignancy, CTCS often discovers incidental pulmonary nodules (IPN). CTCS excludes the upper chest, where malignancy is common. Full-chest CTCS (FCT) may be a cost-effective screening tool for IPN.

Burst fracture is a common thoracolumbar injury that is treated using posterior pedicle instrumentation and fusion combined with transpedicular intracorporeal grafting after reduction. In this study, we compared the outcome of these two techniques by using radiologic imaging and functional outcome.

There are few reports of cervical myelopathy caused by an attack of subaxial calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) deposition. Moreover, there has been no report on cervical myelopathy by subaxial CPPD deposition with simultaneous asymptomatic crowned dens syndrome (CDS) at the same time.

Calcium (Ca2+) propagates within tissues serving as an important information carrier. In particular, cilia beat frequency in oviduct cells is partially regulated by Ca2+ changes. Thus, measuring the calcium density and characterizing the traveling wave plays a key role in understanding biological phenomena.

Butterfly wing color patterns emerge as the result of a regular arrangement of scales produced by epithelial scale cells at the pupal stage. These color patterns and scale arrangements are coordinated throughout the wing. However, the mechanism by which the development of scale cells is controlled across the entire wing remains elusive.

Microcalcifications (MCs) are tiny deposits of calcium in breast soft tissue. Approximately 30% of early invasive breast cancers have fine, granular MCs detectable on mammography; however, their significance in breast tumorigenesis is controversial.

This study aimed to determine the effect of different ozone concentrations applied with different exposure times on the chemical composition and the surface morphology of enamel. Twenty human mandibular molars were divided into four groups according to ozone concentration and exposure times. Group A received 90 lg of ozone/ml oxygen for 1 min, group B received 90 lg of ozone/ml oxygen for 2 min, group C received 120 lg of ozone/ml oxygen for 1 min and group D received 120 lg of ozone/ml oxygen for 2 min.

In a clinical practice of the angiography, the blood vessel analysis is substantially important mainly in a sense of an objectification and modeling of the pathological spots such as the blood vessel calcifications. An amount of the calcification is commonly just estimated by naked eyes; therefore, the automatic modeling may be beneficial in a context of an extraction of the blood vessel features well representing a level of the blood vessel deterioration.

Fluorescence ratio imaging indicates that immobilized, aspirin-treated platelets, loaded with Fura-2, respond to inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate- (InsP3)-generating agonists such as thrombin by high-frequency, irregular rises in cytosolic [Ca 2+ ] i with spikes that vary in peak level and peak-to-peak interval. This differs from the regular [Ca 2+ ] i oscillations observed inother, larger cells.

The most basic yet comprehensive component of a strong institutional image is a unified visual presentation. Collectively, all elements of the University of Kentucky must present to the world a consistent image that reflects our quality, professionalism and mission. The University of Kentucky name carries heavy responsibility. It stands as the sum of the institution’s many parts and embodies the authentic, recognizable essence of this institution. It must reinforce to many diverse audiences a definitive and unique impression.

When studiedin vitro, mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) is associated with an increase in mitochondrial per-meability to solutes up to 1500 Da in mass and a loss of electrical potential difference across the inner mitochondrial membrane (Dwmit). The MPT has been implicated as being important in cellular calcium homeostasis, autophagy and cell death via necrosis and apoptosis.

Vegetarians of all types can achieve recommended nutrient intakes through careful selection of foods. These individuals should give special attention to their intakes of protein, iron, and vitamin B12, as well as calcium and vitamin D if avoiding milk products. In addition, vegetarians could select only nuts, seeds, and legumes from the meat and beans group, or they could include eggs if so desired. At the 2,000calorie level, they could choose about 1.5 ounces of nuts and 2 /3 cup legumes instead of 5.5 ounces of meat, poultry, and/or fish.

In 1665, a book was published that inaugurated the use of the microscope to investigate the natural world. The author was Robert Hooke, a talented artist, architect, and amateur scientist. Hooke wrote Micrographia: Or Some Physiological Descriptions of Minute Bodies Made by Magnifying Glasses with Observations and Inquiries Thereupon, at the behest of the newly chartered Royal Society in London, for whom he was working as curator of scientific experiments. In Micrographia, he presented the first detailed observations of everyday objects made with his self-constructed light microscope....

Since its introduction in the early 1970s, computed tomography (CT) has become a robust modality to evaluate extracranial, thoracic, and abdominal vascular distributions. It has become a gold standard to non-invasively image the aorta, pulmonary arteries, great vessels, renal and peripheral arteries. However, cardiac anatomy evaluation with this modality was not possible, due to rapid cardiac motion and slow image acquisition times.
