  • The Nordic Red Cattle (NRC) consists of animls belonging to the Danish Red, Finnish Ayrshire, and Swedish Red breeds. Compared to the Holstein breed, NRC animals are smaller, have a shorter calving interval, lower mastitis incidence and lower rates of stillborn calves, however they produce less milk, fat and protein.

  • The present study on Murrah buffaloes was conducted at Cattle and Buffalo Farm (Livestock Production and Management Section), ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute. Reproductive data pertaining to post partum interval to estrus (PPIE), service period (SP), number of services per conception (NoS/C) and breeding efficiency (BE) were recorded and analysed to examine the effects of pre-partum body condition score, lactation order, age at calving, season of calving, body weight at calving and dry period on various reproductive traits.

  • he present investigation was conducted to study the effect of various non genetic factors like farm, parity, period of calving and season of calving on different production traits like total lactation milk yield (TLMY), 305 day milk yield (305MY), peak yield (PY), milk yield per day of lactation length (MY/LL) and milk yield per day of calving interval (MY/CI) in Murrah buffaloes. The data analysed include records of 2959 buffaloes, progeny of 219 sires maintained over a period of 24 years (1992-2015) at Buffalo research centre (BRC), LUVAS, Hisar and Animal farm ICAR-CIRB, Hisar.

  • Secretion of prostaglandin F2α at the time of maternal recognition of pregnancy leads to embryonic loss. Early embryonic losses are one of the important causes of repeat breeding which increases the calving interval and leads to economic losses to farmers. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit the synthesis of PGF2α. The present study was designed to study the effect of treatment by GnRH analogue - Buserelin acetate, Progesterone (P4) and Tolfenamic acid on 32 repeat-breeding crossbred cattle aged 3-8 years.

  • Embryonic mortality (EM) is a major concern in the dairy industry across the world and it occurs due to loss of conceptus following fertilization until days 42-45 of pregnancy. The present study was carried out with the objective to detect EM in the crossbred cattle at the University Livestock Farm, Mannuthy, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University during the period from September 2017 to August 2019. Among the breedable animals inseminated at spontaneous oestrus, non-return animals (n=362) were selected for the study.

  • Present study was based on three genetic groups viz., Jersey × Local (G1), Holstein Friesian × Local (G2) and Local (G3) cows, data collected from the field condition of Allahabad district, to determine the effect of service period, gestation period and calving interval. High estimates of heritability (above 60%) in broad sense were recorded for tall the characters under study.

  • Cattle is one of the major livestock species for milk production, contributing significantly to the economy of our country and continuous milk production needs regular conception and successful calf crop production. World-over, for dairy economy, there is emphasis on one calf per year per cattle. Successful calving follows survival of the conceptus through embryonic and fetal development.

  • Micro-mineral deficiencies of Zinc, Manganese, Iodine and Copper have been identified in blood plasma and serum levels of livestock in state of Punjab. Eighteen female buffalo calves of 15 day of age were randomly divided into 2 groups of nine each and fed calf starter of ingredient composition as per the prevailing feeding practice at the university dairy farm containing 0.66% zinc and 0.1% copper (organic and inorganic) in the mineral mixture as per specifications along with green fodder and milk. The growth study was of 120 days.

  • Metritis and endometritis are the very common postpartum uterine infections that results into infertility in dairy cattle, production loss and economical losses to the farmer. As postpartum uterus favors bacterial growth so it is frequently found in almost of unhygienic environment reared animals. Breaching of birth canal during dystocia, retention of placenta, wet environment during winter season and immunosuppression due to many reasons are the risk factors for the bacteria invasion to uterus.

  • Reproductive traits describe the animal’s ability to conceive, calve down and suckle the calf to weaning successfully (Davis 1993). These traits are important since they affect the herd size and off take. Reproductive performance is commonly evaluated by analysing female reproductive traits. The traits regularly considered include age at first calving, calving interval and calving rate. Male fertility traits are rarely included in genetic evaluations despite their influence on the female reproductive performance. These traits include semen quality and quantity traits and scrotal size.
