Canine parvovirus infection in dogs
-
Canine parvovirus (CPV) is one of the most important pathogens of dogs. Despite vaccination, CPV infections are still ubiquitous in dogs, and the three antigenic variants 2a, 2b and 2c are variously distributed in the canine population worldwide.

Among the viruses, infection with canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) was considered as highly contagious and causes acute haemorrhagic gastroenteritis and myocarditis in dogs. In the present study, faecal samples from fourteen pups affected with canine parvoviral enteritis were subjected to detailed bacteriological examination.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious cause of serious and often fatal disease in dogs. An unvaccinated male non-descriptive pup of 4 months old with the history of pyrexia, frequent haemorrhagic diarrhea and vomiting was presented to the Infectious Unit of Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC), Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal. The CPV infection was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with concurrent infection by Ancylostoma sp and complication by E.coli.

CPV infection is considered as the most pathogenic and contagious infection of dogs causing haemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Molecular detection using PCR is used widely for detection and confirmation of CPV infection in dogs. Present study was conducted to detect CPV in the faeces of dogs showing clinical signs of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. A total of 52 dogs suffering from gastroenteritis were screened for the study, out of which 31 dogs were found to be affected with CPV infection.

Canine parvoviral enteritis (CPVE) is a serious disease of dogs of less than six months age group. This disease is caused by canine parvovirus 2, 2a, 2b and 2c subtypes of CPV.Diagnosis and therapeutic management of CPVE affected dogs are usually based on clinical diagnosis. This study aims the applicability of haemagglutination test in diagnosis of CPV infection. A total of 110 faecal swabs of dogs suspected for CPVE were collected and subjected to haemagglutination (HA) test using porcine red blood cells. Thirty two samples (29.0 %) were positive to CPV infection by HA.
