Capsular typing

The capsular material from Lactobacillus plantarum IMB19, an isolate from fermented vegetables, has been analyzed and our results demonstrate that most of the coat of this bacterium consists of glycerol- and ribitol-type teichoic acids, further decorated with other substituents (α-glucose and alanine), and of a capsular polysaccharide (CPS) with a linear nonasaccharide repeating unit, rich in rhamnose, interconnected to the next via a phosphodiester bridge.

Pasteurella multocida is the etiological agent responsible for several diseases in a wide range of hosts around the world and thus, causes serious economic losses. Acute septicemia associated with capsular type B P. multocida has recently emerged in Europe and continuous outbreaks of these acute processes have been described in Spain since they were first detected in pigs in 2009 and cattle in 2015.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is one of the major bacterial pathogens responsible for neonatal sepsis. Whole genome sequencing has, in recent years, emerged as a reliable tool for capsular typing and antimicrobial resistance prediction.

Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) can cause invasive diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia, or sepsis. Typeable Hi includes six serotypes (a through f), each expressing a unique capsular polysaccharide. The capsule, encoded by the genes within the capsule locus, is a major virulence factor of typeable Hi. Non-typeable (NTHi) does not express capsule and is associated with invasive and non-invasive diseases.

The present study was implemented to evaluate S. aureus for their 2 major capsular polysaccharide genes namely cap5k and cap8k. Capsule is an important virulence factor of S. aureus which help the organism in its survival by evading host immune system specially phagocytosis.

The present investigation was designed to determine the frequency of capsular polysaccharide genes (cap5 & cap8) in Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from raw milk samples of various regions of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan state of India. In this study presence of S. aureus and cap5and cap8 gene was evaluated by Polymerase Chain Reaction.

A recent study that examined multiple strains ofCampylobacter jejuni reported that HS:19, a serostrain that has been associated with the onset of Guillain–Barre´ syndrome, had unidentified labile, capsular polysaccharide (CPS) structures. In this study, we expand on this observation by using current glyco-analytical technologies to characterize these unknown groups.

Evasion of Host Defense Mechanisms Evasion of host defense mechanisms is critical to invasion. Staphylococci possess an antiphagocytic polysaccharide microcapsule. Most human S. aureus infections are due to capsular types 5 and 8. The S. aureus capsule also plays a role in the induction of abscess formation. The capsular polysaccharides are characterized by a zwitterionic charge pattern (the presence of both negatively and positively charged molecules) that is critical to abscess formation. Protein A, an MSCRAMM unique to S. aureus, acts as an Fc receptor.
