Ebook "Bio-synthetic polymer conjugates" is comprised of five chapters summarizing the state of the art in the synthesis of bioorganic–synthetic polymer conjugates based on oligo- and polypeptides, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleotides, and terpenes. The main focus is on synthesis, whereas special materials properties and potential applications are not discussed in great detail.

In ebook "Carbohydrates in sustainable development II: A mine for functional molecules and materials (Topics in current chemistry, Volume 295)" a survey on the state of the art of ionic liquids derived from sugars is also presented. Synthetic polymers can now be made based on carbohydrate building blocks. The potential of these biocompatible and biodegradable macromolecular materials to replace the polluting petroleum-based polymers is also discussed.

The capsular material from Lactobacillus plantarum IMB19, an isolate from fermented vegetables, has been analyzed and our results demonstrate that most of the coat of this bacterium consists of glycerol- and ribitol-type teichoic acids, further decorated with other substituents (α-glucose and alanine), and of a capsular polysaccharide (CPS) with a linear nonasaccharide repeating unit, rich in rhamnose, interconnected to the next via a phosphodiester bridge.

In this study, a strategy was adopted to enhance the use of ramie fibers as raw material for isolation of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). Ramie pulp was produced by alkaline organosolv followed by bleaching. CNFs were produced by mechanical defibrillation, and films were fabricated via casting.

The high-, medium-, and low-amylose rice starches were isolated by the alkaline method and acetylated by using acetic anhydride for 10, 30, and 90 min of reaction. The degree of substitution (DS), the Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the X-ray diffractograms, the thermal, morphological, and pasting properties, and the swelling power and solubility of native and acetylated starches were evaluated.

Chitosan-sheath and -chitin-core nanowhiskers (CsNWs) have been successfully generated by surface deacetylation of chitin nanowhiskers (CtNWs) in the never-dried state. Acid hydrolysis (3N HCl, 30 mL/g, 104 ◦C) of pure chitin derived from crab shell yielded 65% 4–10 nm thick, 16 nm wide and 214 nm long chitin whiskers (CtNWs) that were 86% crystalline and 81% acetylated.
