Cartilage homeostasis

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex disease involving both biomechanical and metabolic factors that alter the tissue homeostasis of articular cartilage and subchondral bone. The catabolic activities of extracellular matrix degradation products, especially fibronectin (FN), have been implicated in mediating cartilage degradation.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disorder, and a major cause of pain and disability among the elderly. Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) has been shown to be a key regulator of chondrocyte hypertrophy during skeletogenesis.

Although osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial disease, little has been reported regarding the cooperative interaction among these factors on cartilage metabolism. Here we examined the synergistic effect of ovariectomy (OVX) and excessive mechanical stress (forced running) on articular cartilage homeostasis in a mouse model resembling a human postmenopausal condition.

The phenotypes of osteoarthritis (OA) consist of cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) metabolism disorder and the breakdown of cartilage homeostasis, which are induced by pro-inflammatory factors and oxidative stress.

Greater age and body mass index are strong risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA). Older and overweight individuals may be more susceptible to OA because these factors alter tissue turnover in menisci, articular cartilage, and bone via altered glucose homeostasis and inflammation.

Cartilage destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) occurs primarily in the pannus-cartilage interface. The close contact of the synovium-cartilage interface implicates crosstalk between synovial fibroblasts and chondrocytes. The aim of this study is to explore the differentially expressed genes and novel microRNA regulations potentially implicated in the dysregulated cartilage homeostasis in joint destruction of RA.

Synovitis in osteoarthritis (OA) the consequence of low grade inflammatory process caused by cartilage breakdown products that stimulated the production of pro-inflammatory mediators by fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS). FLS participate in joint homeostasis and low grade inflammation in the joint microenvironment triggers FLS transformation.

Hypoxia and hypoxia-related genes are important factors in articular chon-drocytes during cartilage homeostasis and osteoarthritis. We have investi-gated the various apoptotic factors that show significance in synovial fluid obtained from normal and experimental osteoarthritic animal models and have evaluated the effect of hypoxia on articular chondrocyte apoptosis induced by these apoptotic factors.
