For infants undergoing complex cardiac surgery, hemodynamic management after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is challenging because of severe myocardial edema, vasomotor dysfunction and weak tolerance to a change in blood volume. More importantly, the lack of availability of equipment for advanced monitoring, such as transesophageal echocardiography or transthoracic echocardiography, restricts the accurate assessment of hemodynamics.

Heat stress is a form of non fever hyperthermia occurs when heat load exceeds than the heat loss from the body. The body temperature reaches above 105 – 106˚ F, often complicated by changes in other body system such as acid-base balance, kidney, liver, cerebral edema and blood clotting mechanism. More common in brachycephalic breeds, long thick hairy breeds, young ones and aged animals. Physical examination is marked by excessive hyperemia, panting, hypersalivation, tachycardia, and various neurologic signs.

Stroke remains the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. This fact highlights the need to search for potential drug targets that can reduce stroke-related brain damage. We showed recently that a glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) inhibitor attenuates tissue plasminogen activator-induced hemorrhagic transformation after permanent focal cerebral ischemia.

As it is associated with significant number of complications (11,8% to 21,6%) as well as high costs, some authors advocate conservative treatment. High incidence of re-ruptures (12% to 17%), lengthened tendon and loss of strength are the main arguments for the opponents to criticize this method. Percutaneous repair seems to bridge the gap, combining the advantages of conservative and operative treatment, particularly if performed in an outpatient manner and under local anesthesia.

Complications Patients with meningococcal meningitis may develop cranial nerve palsies, cortical venous thrombophlebitis, and cerebral edema. Children may develop subdural effusions. Permanent sequelae can include mental retardation, deafness, and hemiparesis. The major long-term morbidity of fulminant meningococcemia is the loss of skin, limbs, or digits that results from ischemic necrosis and infarction. Diagnosis Few clinical clues help the physician distinguish the patient with early meningococcal disease from patients with other acute systemic infections. ...
