Cham Islands

The study investigated the Phaeophyceae during the year 2019 at sixteen sampling sites representative for Cham islands. Specimens were collected by scuba diving, snorkelling and walking at the upper tidal zone in both dry and rainy seasons. Twenty-five species of the Phaeophyceae identified for Cham islands from four orders, four families and eleven genera.

Coral bleaching events are of concern globally because of their adverse effect on the coral reef ecosystem. However, there is a lack of observed bleaching in many coral reefs in Vietnam, leading to difficulty in implementing the suitable management and protection solutions.

Situated in a critical position on the sea routes in Southeast Asia, the Cham Islands or Cu Lao Cham (Vietnamese: Cù Lao Chàm) emerged remarkably as an important outport of the maritime kingdom of Champa since the first centuries. Over many centuries, the region of the Cham Islands and the estuary port of the Great Champa, also called Dai Chiem seaport (Vietnamese: Đại Chiêm hải khẩu or Cửa Đại), not only was seen as a destination and a trade centre of the small state of Amaravati, but also played a significant role in linking the kingdom of Champa with the outside world.

This paper presents an evaluation of the ocean wave regime impacting the areas of Cua Dai estuary by using the model of MIKE21SW. The purpose of this study is to fully interprete the role of dynamical factor, ocean wave in erosion-accretion processes. The results showed a convergence of ocean waves at the estuary of Cua Dai although it is obstructed by the Cu Lao Cham island in front of the Cua Dai estuary. The northeast and north-northeast waves are mainly prevailing with the frequency of more than 60% in the year.

Assessments of fish fauna in the World Biosphere Reserve of Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An were based on analyses of data of visual censuses and samples collected at 5 sites of nipa palm, 9 sites of seagrass beds and 15 sites of coral reefs in June 2016, 200 samples from 25 fishing gears in wet and dry seasons (November 2015 and June 2016), and species composition gathered from previous (1994, 2004 and 2008) and recent studies (2017).

With reference to all available literatures and specimens from the recent surveys, we obtained confirmed records of 9 bat species from Cu Lao Cham and 3 species from Ly Son. Of these, Megaderma spasma and Taphozous melanopogon are new to Cu Lao Cham while Rhinolophus macrotis is new to Ly Son. These three species were rarely recorded from other islands of Vietnam and also uncommon within Cu Lao Cham and Ly Son. These new records not only expand the known distributional range, but also provide worthwhile notes on a narrow geographical variation in morphology and echolocation of each species.

The impact status of invasive species in the Hoi An mainland part is more serious than the situation in the islands. Base on the results, we suggest that, five species, beggar-ticks, coast morning glory Bay Biscayne creeping-oxeye, Blue porterweed and billygoat-weed should be added in the invasive appendix of the national invasive species list while three other species as vilfa stellata, guavaand rose myrtle should be listed in the potential appendix of that list.
