Characteristics of biodiesel

The main research problem from the usage of diesel engine arises from increased fuel prices and emissions releasing from combustion. The objective of the current work relies on finding out a suitable biodiesel blend and improving the diesel engine characteristics by means of additives.

Microalgae are organisms effective of accumulating high quantity of industrially important lipids with promising characteristics as an excellent feedstock for biodiesel production. This study assess the possibility of using a green microalga, Chlorococcum infusionum (EAU10) for biodiesel production by evaluating the growth characteristic, lipid yield and fatty acid profile of the microalga cultivated at varying concentrations of nitrogen source.

In this study, two indigenous Chlorella strains were evaluated for triacylglycerol (TAG) production and related parameters during 10 days of N-deprivation. The strains were identified based on morphological characteristics and genomic information, named as Chlorella sp. IMU12 and Chlorella sp. IMU17. Time-dependent reduction of growth was accompanied by decreased chlorophyll content, reduced oxygen evolution ratio, and elevated carotenoid content of both strains cultivated in N-free Bold’s basal medium.

In this paper we describe the emissions of glycerol/diesel and glycerol/biodiesel emulsion blends on marine diesel engines. In addition, fuel physicochemical characteristics and handling issues for these fuels are discussed. Glycerol is an attractive fuel blending material as it is a waste product of biodiesel production with desirable combustion and fuel properties when emulsified into diesel and biodiesel fuels.

Waste cooking oil is applied as a raw material of biodiesel because it has the characteristics of diesel fuel. This research was carried out based on American Standard Testing and Material Methods. This research utilized low cost feedstock of waste beef tallow for biodiesel synthesis and its application in a CI engine. The biodiesel and diesel blends B0, B20, B40, B60, B80 and B100 were used in a stationary tractor diesel engine. Performance and emission parameters brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), exhaust gas temperature (EGT), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and hydrocarbon (HC) were tested at a constant speed of 2000 rpm and varying loads.

This paper critically investigates both petroleum diesel and biodiesel emissions from the view point of LTC attaining strategies. Due to a number of differences of physical and chemical properties, petroleum diesel and biodiesel emission characteristics differ a bit under LTC strategies. LTC strategies decrease NOx and PM simultaneously but increase HC and CO emissions. Recent attempts to attain LTC by biodiesel have created a hope for reduced HC and CO emissions. Decreased performance issue during LTC is also being taken care of by latest ideas.
