  • The importance of particle characterization in both the research and development, and the manufacture and quality control of materials and products that we use in our everyday lives is, in some sense, invisible to those of us not directly involved with these activities. Few of us know how particle size, shape, or surface characteristics can influence, for example, the efficacy of a painreliever, or the efficiency of a catalytic converter, or the resolution of a printer.

  • The basic distinction between already known algorithmic characterizations of matroids and antimatroids is in the fact that for antimatroids the ordering of elements is of great importance. While antimatroids can also be characterized as set systems, the question whether there is an algorithmic description of antimatroids in terms of sets and set functions was open for some period of time.

  • This work presents the preparation of nanocomposite TiO2/SnO2 films by using spray pyrolysis and followed by sol-gel technique from TiCl4 and SnCl4 solutions. Obtained films were characterized by XRD, SEM and photoconductivity measurement. It was found that in this method the nanocomposite TiO2/SnO2 films were constituted of nanosized TiO2 and SnO2 surrounded the TiO2 grains. The obtained nanocomposite TiO2/SnO2 materials were shown to have the photoconducting properties.

  • We report unambiguous proof of the stability of a carbinol intermediate in the case of P450 metabolism of an N-methylated natural cyclo-peptide, namely tentoxin. Under mild acidic or neutral conditions, the lifetime of carbinol-amide is long enough to be fully characterized.

  • This study characterized the human apolipoprotein H [APOH; b2-glycopro-tein I (b2GPI)] promoter and its variants byin vitro functional experiments and investigated their relationship with human plasmab2GPI levels. We examined the individual effects of 12 APOHpromoter single nucleotide polymorphisms in the 5¢ flanking region ofAPOH(1.4 kb) on luciferase activity in COS-1 cells and HepG2 cells and their impact on plasma...

  • This opinion paper discusses subjective natural language problems in terms of their motivations, applications, characterizations, and implications. It argues that such problems deserve increased attention because of their potential to challenge the status of theoretical understanding, problem-solving methods, and evaluation techniques in computational linguistics. The author supports a more holistic approach to such problems; a view that extends beyond opinion mining or sentiment analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose an implementable characterization of genre suitable for automatic genre identification of web pages. This characterization is implemented as an inferential model based on a modified version of Bayes’ theorem. Such a model can deal with genre hybridism and individualization, two important forces behind genre evolution. Results show that this approach is effective and is worth further research.

  • Miscommunication in speech recognition systems is unavoidable, but a detailed characterization of user corrections will enable speech systems to identify when a correction is taking place and to more accurately recognize the content of correction utterances. In this paper we investigate the adaptations of users when they encounter recognition errors in interactions with a voice-in/voice-out spoken language system.

  • Since the early Sixties and Seventies it has been known that the regular and context-free languages are characterized by definability in the monadic second-order theory of certain structures. More recently, these descriptive characterizations have been used to obtain complexity results for constraint- and principle-based theories of syntax and to provide a uniform model-theoretic framework for exploring the relationship between theories expressed in disparate formal terms.

  • The synthesis and characterization of chitosan (CS) nanoparticles used as drug carrier was reported. The formation of nanoparticles, taking place in an aqueous phase without using auxiliary toxic substances via the ionic interaction between NH3 + protonated group of CS and phosphate group of sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) was monitored in situ by combined UV-vis and pH measurements. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by TGA/DTA, XRD and TEM. The particle size, estimated by TEM, was found around 50 - 70 nm, with a quite uniform size distribution.

  • Structural Characterization of Crystalline and Non-crystalline Materials – A Brief Background of Current Requirements The X-ray powder diffraction technique is a well-established and widely used method for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of various substances in a variety of states (see, for example, [1]). However, in a multi-component mixture with a relatively complicated chemical composition, we frequently find difficulty in identifying the individual chemical constituents by the conventional X-ray powder diffraction method.

  • The aminolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste bottle with excess amount of aliphatic diamines, such as tetramethylenediamine (TMDA) and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) without catalyst has been carried out. Each trimers and pentamers in the obtained products were isolated and characterized by FTIR, NMR, HPLC methods. Although an excess of diamine was employed, longer blocks of oligomers were still formed as minor products.

  • In this research, iron-dextrin complex has been successfully synthesized from ferric chloride and dextrin in aqueous solution. The complex powder was thoroughly characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and thermal analysis (DTA-TGA). The results indicated that the complex contains akaganeite (β-FeOOH) core bounded by dextrin molecules. The akaganeite core ranges from 20 to 30 nm and the complex grain size varies from 40 to 60 nm.
