Thoracoscopic surgery has greatly alleviated the postoperative pain of patients, but postsurgical acute and chronic pain still exists and needs to be addressed. Indwelling drainage tubes are one of the leading causes of postoperative pain after thoracic surgery. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the effects of alternative drainage on acute and chronic pain after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).

The determination of the adequate depth of superior vena cava cannulae during minimally invasive cardiac surgery is important for warranting venous drainage and preventing complications during cardiopulmonary bypass. We investigated whether preoperative cardiac computed tomography might be useful for predicting the optimal depth of superior vena cava cannulae.

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is an extremely rare disease with pulmonary fibrosis (PF), oculocutaneous albinism, induced platelet dysfunction, and granulomatous colitis. Although patients with HPSassociated PF (HPS-PF) often receive treatment with anti-fibrotic agents, including pirfenidone, many HPS-PF cases are progressive. The development of pneumothorax is known to be rare in HPS-PF.

The initial management of pneumothorax remains controversial, and we speculated that this might be because there is no method available for evaluation of air leak during initial management. We have developed a system for measurement of intrapleural pressure in pneumothorax to address air leak without the need for chest drainage.

Patients with a primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) who are treated with chest tube drainage are traditionally connected to an analogue chest drainage system, containing a water seal and using a visual method of monitoring air leakage. Electronic systems with continuous digital monitoring of air leakage provide better insight into actual air leakage and changes in leakage over time, which may lead to a shorter length of hospital stay.

We reported 2 clinical cases of internal mammary artery injury following blunt chest trauma. General features of both cases are sternal body fracture, subcutaneous emphysema, severe hemothorax and severe hemorrhagic shock. All patients were diagnosed and treated promptly. After surgery with pleural drainage, excellent outcomes and stable status were seen in both patients at the time of discharge.

Chylopericardium effusion is characterized by the accumulation of milky effusion in the pericardium. It is often idiopathic but it can be secondary to trauma, chest radiation, tuberculosis and malignancy. If cardiac tamponade ensues, it becomes life-threatening.
