Videoconferencing is considered an alternative to face-to-face consultations and a possibility to help overcome access-to-care barriers in mental health care services. Barriers to child and adolescent mental health services are particularly apparent in the case of children and adolescents receiving child welfare services.

Screening for developmental delay among children attending a rural community welfare clinic in Ghana

Evaluating youth welfare services is vital, both because of the considerable influence they have on the development of children and adolescents, as well as owing to the extensive financial costs involved, especially for child residential care.

Child maltreatment of all types is a serious concern for society, and it is important to monitor trends in incidence in order to inform child welfare agencies and policy-makers about emerging issues. In Germany, however, information on such trends is limited: apart from official sources, the only published study is a comparison of surveys conducted in 1992 and 2011 that had focused primarily on sexual abuse.

There is a well-documented link between child maltreatment and poor health across the lifespan. This provides a strong case for ongoing research with youth involved in the child welfare system to reduce negative out‑comes and support resilience while being inclusive of youth voices.

Due to the increasing rate of children and families who require support from both youth welfare services and from mental health services, a solid cross-institutional cooperation is needed to provide coordinated and integrated help.

Adolescence is a time of rapid physiological and psychological change of intensive readjustment to the family, school, work and social life and of preparation for adult roles. The term “adolescence” literally means “to emerge”, “to mature” or “achieve identity”. It is a significant phase of transition from childhood to adulthood, which is marked by physical changes accompanied by psychological changes. This is the time to make adolescents aware of and informed about various facets of life in order to promote a healthy way of living.

The World Health Organization recognises the quality of the early years as a key social determinant of health17. There are sound theoretical and empirical reasons for focusing mental health promotion interventions on young children to prevent a range of problems in later life18 including mental health problems, obesity, criminality, family violence, poor literacy, unemployment and welfare dependency. Prevention and early intervention is also less expensive and more effective than treatment19.

Regimen efficiency and simplification. Another key advantage of Options B and B+ is greater efficiency, very much in accord with Treatment 2.0 principles. First, the same simplified, fixed-dose combination ARV regimen can be used throughout the PMTCT intervention. Further, it is possible, and highly desirable, to provide the same regimen both for PMTCT and as the first-line national ART regimen for non-pregnant individuals.
