Childhood obesity is a pertinent public health problem in the UK. Consumption of free sugars has been associated with the development of obesity. In 2018, the Change 4Life (C4L) 100 cal snack campaign was launched with the slogan ‘100 calorie snacks, two a day max’, aiming to encourage parents to choose lower sugar, fat and calorie snacks for their children.

Beginning at a young age, children with cystic fibrosis (CF) embark on demanding care regimens that pose challenges to parents. We examined the extent to which clinical, demographic and psychosocial features inform patterns of adherence to pulmonary therapies and how these patterns can be used to develop clinical personas, defined as aspects of adherence barriers that are presented by parents and/or perceived by clinicians, in order to enhance personalized CF care delivery.

Questionnaires can be used to assess perceived indoor air quality and symptoms in schools. Questionnaires for primary school aged children have traditionally been parent-administered, but self-administered questionnaires would be easier to administer and may yield as good, if not better, information.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) negatively impact health throughout the life course. For children exposed to ACEs, resilience may be particularly important. However, the literature regarding resilience, particularly the self-regulation aspect of resilience, is not often described in children with ACEs.

Guidelines set out by the Department of Health (2011) call for interventions to increase children’s physical activity levels, starting from birth. Early years children should be given ample opportunities for unrestricted movement (such as crawling and water-based play) to increase their physiological development and encourage bonding with others. Drawing on robust research, the report argued that levels of physical activity required in childhood to help achieve healthy weight, bone and cardiometabolic health and psychological well-being are higher than previously estimated.

Following the UNICEF report, a comparative study, carried out by Nairn and IPSOS MORI (2011), compared the lives of children in UK with those in Sweden and Spain, to uncover why the UK was ranked so poorly in relation to children’s well-being. Using subjective indicators, the study found that children perceived spending time with their friends and family, as well as having fun and engaging things to do, as fundamental to their well-being.

This review highlights the importance of play, particularly outdoor play, for increasing levels of physical activity, alongside other positive influences on a child’s well-being, such as opportunities to understand and respect the natural world. However, children seem to be getting fewer opportunities to play. A combination of poor play environments, busy school schedules and an increase in structured activities has meant that this beneficial and basic children’s right has become sidelined, often perceived as an ‘unaffordable luxury’ (Elkind 2008).

The evidence confirms that it is important to allow children every opportunity to play, as this can benefit their physical and mental health, well-being, and social and emotional development. Play is also an invaluable part of family and community life. The study also demonstrates that while we should acknowledge the benefits of play in children’s lives, we must be cautious not to ‘instrumentalise’ play by perceiving it merely as a tool to achieve other benefits (Lester and Russell 2008).

The perception of odour may result in some individuals reporting subjective sensory irritation, and individuals may perceive formaldehyde at concentrations below 0.1 mg/m3 . However, this is not considered to be an adverse health effect. The NOAEL of 0.6 mg/m3 for the eye blink response is adjusted using an assess- ment factor of 5 derived from the standard deviation of nasal pungency (sensory irritation) thresholds, leading to a value of 0.12 mg/m3 , which has been rounded down to 0.1 mg/m3 .
