Ornamental cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is an attractive landscape plant that remains colorful at low temperatures during winter. Its key feature is its inner leaf coloration, which can include red, pink, lavender, blue, violet and white. Some ornamental cabbages exhibit variation in leaf color pattern linked to leaf developmental stage. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism underlying changes in leaf pigmentation pattern between developmental stages.

Leaf color is an important trait in breeding of leafy vegetables. Y-05, a pakchoi (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis) cultivar, displays yellow inner (YIN) and green outer leaves (GOU) after cold acclimation. However, the mechanism of this special phenotype remains elusive.

‘Regal Splendour’ (Hosta variety) is famous for its multi-color leaves, which are useful resources for exploring chloroplast development and color changes. The expressions of chlorophyll biosynthesis-related genes (HrHEMA, HrPOR and HrCAO) in Hosta have been demonstrated to be associated with leaf color.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and their regulatory functions in anthocyanin, carotenoid, and chlorophyll accumulation have been extensively characterized in many plant species. However, the miRNA regulatory mechanism in betalain biosynthesis remains mostly unknown.

Pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] is one of the most important commercial fruit crops of the family Bromeliaceae in the world. In pineapple, irregular flowering behaviour is observed and sometimes even after 18 months of planting less than 50% of flowering occurs and unnecessary delay may be observed. Paclobutrazol (PBZ), a triazole plant growth regulator which inhibits gibberellin biosynthesis has been effectively used to induce and manipulate flowering, fruiting in several perennial fruit crops. To evaluate effect of paclobutrazol on flowering characteristics of Pineapple cv.

The new shoots of the albino tea cultivar ‘Anji Baicha’ are yellow or white at low temperatures and turn green as the environmental temperatures increase during the early spring. ‘Anji Baicha’ metabolite profiles exhibit considerable variability over three color and developmental stages, especially regarding the carotenoid, chlorophyll, and theanine concentrations.

European Flint maize inbred lines are used as a source of adaptation to cold in most breeding programs in Northern Europe. A deep understanding of their adaptation strategy could thus provide valuable clues for further improvement, which is required in the current context of climate change.

Ripening of fleshy fruits has been classically defined as climacteric or non-climacteric. Both types of ripening are controlled by plant hormones, notably by ethylene in climacteric ripening and by abscisic acid (ABA) in non-climacteric ripening.

Phytyl residues are the common side chains of chlorophyll (Chl) and tocopherols. Geranylgeranyl reductase (GGR), which is encoded by CHLP gene, is responsible for phytyl biosynthesis. The light-harvesting like protein LIL3 was suggested to be required for stability of GGR and protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase in Arabidopsis.

In this study, the inducible function of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a nitric oxide donor) was evaluated based on the changes in some biochemical characteristics of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cv. DX208) involving resistance to cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch). SNP treatment was sufficient to increase content of chlorophylls, reduced aphid-infested damage, accumulated biosynthesis of antioxidants such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids in mungbean plants attacked by A. craccivora.
