With the aim of inferring phylogenetic relationships among 86 species (including 45 species from Vietnam) mostly of the subfamily Convallarioideae (=Nolinoideae) (Asparagaceae sensu APG IV), we analyzed their chloroplast DNA sequences (rbcL and trnL-F) by both Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) methods. Our dataset included six of the seven tribes classified in this subfamily; Convallarieae, Dracaeneae, Liriopeae Nolineae, Polygonateae and Rusceae (Eriospermeae not examined).

The study using molecular data from three DNA regions (matK, rbcL, and trnH-psbA) supported the monophyly of Melodinus. The M. cochinchinensis from Vietnam and China are closely related. There are some genetic variations in the sequences of Melodinus cochinchinensis from Belgium versus Asiatic M. cochinchinensis, as well as the phylogenetic position of the species, suggesting the possibility of misidentification of M. cochinchinensis from Belgium.

In this study, we sequenced the chloroplast gene region (matK) to identify the genetic characteristics of T. chantrieri and their phylogenetic inference in the genus Tacca in Ba Vi National Park (Ba Vi NP). This study contributes to developing a DNA barcode database as a foundation for conservation, evolution, and biological systems.

Chloroplast DNA is a primary source of molecular variations for phylogenetic analysis of photosynthetic eukaryotes. However, the sequencing and analysis of multiple chloroplastic regions is difficult to apply to large collections or large samples of natural populations.

Universal conventional DNA barcodes will become more and more popular in biological material identifications. However, in many cases such as processed medicines or canned food, the universal conventional barcodes are unnecessary and/or inapplicable due to DNA degradation.

In this study, a new species, P. nana, from northeast Chongqing in the north of the Yangtze River is described and illustrated. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses based on two nuclear ribosomal DNA regions (ITS and ETS) and three plastid DNA markers (rpl32-trnL, rps16, and trnL-trnF) were carried out to explore the phylogenetic position of the new species within Paraphlomis.

DNA barcoding is a short DNA fragment, is used to distinguish between species, especially morphologically similar species and processed specimens that are difficult to distinguish species. For plants, the regions of DNA used as barcodes in identification or taxonomy are usually sequences of the chloroplast genome and the nuclear genome, including the coding regions and the non-coding regions.

Exploring the phylogenetic relationships between taxa provides important information for science. The phylogenetic study of Macrosolen was conducted based on molecular data sets of 27 taxa with five DNA regions including chloroplast rbcL, matK, and trnL-F and nuclear ribosomal (small subunit rDNA and large subunit rDNA) regions to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationship of Macrosolen.

The aim of this paper was to determine how the pistachio trees evolve, and the evolving factors that influence pistachio population establishment. For that, we investigated pistachio genetic structure from some regions of Tunisia, by sequencing two noncoding chloroplastic regions (trnL (UAA) and trnL-trnF intergenic spacer). We found strong genetic diversity among groups, with the absence of high differentiation between population pairs. A deep phylogeographical break separated two major clusters: “El-Guetar and “Gafsa/Sidi-Bouzid.

The genus Sechium includes 11 species, which are highly related to the genus Sicyos. Sechium is native to Mesoamerica, but only S. edule and S. tacaco have been domesticated. Sechium edule is the most exploited species of the genus due to its broad phenotypic variability. A total of 68 samples from the species S. chinantlense, S. compositum, S. hintonii and S. edule were evaluated, as well as their respective varietal complexes (albus, nigrum and virens groups), thereby amplifying the loci of mitochondrial DNA (CoxIII), chloroplast DNA (rbcL) and the nuclear ribosomal ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region.

Atractylodes DC is the basic original plant of the widely used herbal medicines “Baizhu” and “Cangzhu” and an endemic genus in East Asia. Species within the genus have minor morphological differences, and the universal DNA barcodes cannot clearly distinguish the systemic relationship or identify the species of the genus.

Curcuma aromatica, the herbal medicine belongs to Zingiberaceae family, is well known for antitumor activity through multiple pathways and a potential candidate for complementary medicine in cancer treatment. The aims of this study were to distinguish between Curcuma species based on polymorphisms of the nucleotide sequence of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and preliminarily analyze their potential-anticancer compounds.

DNA barcoding is a useful tool for species identification and phylogenetic construction. We tested the genus/species identification and phylogenetic construction in three tropical medicinal plants such as P. corylifoilia, M. pruriens and C. ternatea using a universal chloroplast DNA barcode trnH-psbA. The trnH-psbA primer pairs were used to amplify 250 bp DNA fragment in all three genera. The barcode sequences were submitted on NCBI-BLAST search and showed the nucleotide sequence similarity (homology) of 96% with P. corylifolia, 100% with M. pruriens and with 77% C. ternatea.
